Hi everyone. My name is Luke from Norway. I am very new to rock polishing/tumbling/lapidary/cabbing. There are so many different words used all over the place that I don't really know what to say. I was introduced to the machine that has six wheels on it and used it to shape/polish(I'm going to go with polish) some nice colored stones down to a nice fine design. I fell in love with this and am now looking for a machine of my own. However as I said before, I find different words being used for all sorts of machines all over the internet. So I am having trouble finding what I want. I narrowed it down to a lapidary polishing machine but even searching for that brings up three-four different machines. So I joined here to in hope that I would find some help

Welcome from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Yes, there are many brand names for you are thinking of. I use a Genie machine by Diamond Pacific. It has 6 wheels and shapes, grinds and polishes. The wheels are diamond coated. There are other machines, too. Look for a cabbing machine.
You have some amazing stones in Norway. I love the pink thulite- none better.

Welcome from California. I, too, use the Diamond Pacific Genie. Excellent machine.
I think the general term for this machine is lapidary arbor.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. I've already found and received a lot of help here. This was not a bad idea Yea so far I have only been in looking at stones in a few stores that sell them in Oslo here. Now that I have moved a bit further out of the city though I have already found a couple of awesome stones while out hiking.

Welcome from Iran. Rock tumbling is when you put your rocks, water and some abrasive powder in a container; the container is then rotated or vibrated for some time. The abrasive putty polishes the rocks where they hit each other. After a long time, you will be rewarded with your rocks, polished.
The machine you mentioned, is used to shape and polish rocks (usually into cabochons or cabs; into a dome shape). Another interesting term you may encounter is rock hounding ! That's my favorite; it means hunting for rocks and gemstones, usually outdoors (rivers, hills, beaches, etc.). Next time you go hiking, if you find yourself finding gemstones and not hiking so much, you are rockhounding for sure!

Welcome to the forum from Cedar City, UTAH USA. If you have basic DIY skills you can make your own lapidary machine. Check out my thread from a few years ago - forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/42508/homemade-10-wheel-arbor-150?page=1The basics are: Mounting diamond coated wheels, bearings & a pulley on a steel shaft. This assembly is mounted to a workbench by risers. Mine are wood, but can be metal or whatever. You need a motor to turn the assembly via a V-belt. Water is supplied above each wheel to cool the wheels & the stone & keep the dust down. You'll need trays & hoods to contain the water spray. Have fun! Lynn

Welcome to the forum Luke. Hope you have a great experience with everyone here. I live in Utah, and have a good size collection myself, but The cool thing about joining is getting involved in traveling Boxes, trips, and rock exchanges, and sharing pictures of your work
