Got a lead on some rocks that might be available. So threw the pick shovel and buckets in the pickup and went to look. Right away I saw a 5 lb lump of chrysocolla and a chunk of jade. Decided to pick up all that I could. Seems to be some old timers collection that was used to fill mud holes in the back yard. Only scratched the surface. Here are some pics of the effort and finds. We are all out gathering the rocks. I did not look much but just grabbed and threw in the bucket. The little girls of the family living in the place came out to help. We all had fun. The chrysocolla and jade that I spotted right away. Two more chunks of jade and some agate. Lots of pet wood and montana agate in the mix
And this showed up along the way......what do you think this is?

Last kind of looks like a calcite geode in agate? Just a noob opinion my ID skills are pathetic.
Obviously someone put a lot of time, effort and love into amassing that collection. It seems obscene that it should be used as pothole filler. Glad you were able to recognize some goodies and salvage them. Maybe enough leftovers for the girls to start their own collections, or at least pique their interest in the beauty of rocks.

Sure wish I had pothole filler like that near me. Hope you can get the majority of what looks like super material out of there before you're shut off. What a shame someones labor of love is so shabbily treated!

Looks like fun with the kiddos!
Pic #3 doesnt seem to contaon jade. Based on your description, you are calling the top shiny one jade. It has clear conchoidal breaks on the edges. Almost as though someone was toying with knapping. I'm sticking my neck out, but that sure seems like a greenish chert to me.
No matter what, fun times indeed!

You are probably quite right on the knapping part. I found a bunch of sharp obsidian flakes in there too. So all that green stuff just looks like green chert to you? OK I bow to your superior knowledge. I don't really know. I am like the gem sellers at the market, if it is green and rock it is jade (OK, OK, bad joke I know) It has been fun going through the rocks. I collected about 350 lbs and there is at least that much more there. I will see if I can go back in the future. What do you think the last rock is? Looks like a fairburn to me.

I'm going to say that geode is all calcite.
Does the banded area scratch with a knife?

I'm going to say that geode is all calcite. Does the banded area scratch with a knife? In a word, no. It does not fizz when acid is applied either. Your rock on the other hand does not look like a typical fairburn and looks to me to be more some kind of a mexican agate. I am now signing off as you have destroyed all your credibility with me. Good bye

Sorry Scott. Gotta agree with fireforged on this one. Not a Fairburn. Looks almost like old stock Mexican crazy lace.

Nope. That's not a Fairburn either. Doesn't look like any of the Southern California agates either. Here's a Fairburn. Both halves of a split Fairburn found on the same day, only a few yards apart.

I think it's super cool that you could rescue someone's collection like this. Gosh, I hope no one does that to my rocks one day. Granted, mine are all slabs, but still....

The last rock picture reminds me of a Dryhead Agate. I have a few with the crystals like that. To me, the banding looks correct for a Dryhead Agate.
