So for my birthday my darling hubby bought me a cell phone Geiger counter! This is a super cool cell phone add on, that really does seem to work very well. I was able to get a few low readings from some Ray Mine, North Carolina material that had that scorch look to the matrix. Ray Mine is a pegmatite location most notably for beryl, but is also known to have rare uranium ore present. But just to make sure it was working correctly, he also ordered me a hot rock. When I unwrapped it, I found the label you see below and a small round tin. Without actually opening the tin, I placed the Geiger counter to the tin, and bamm, instant RED warning on my phone. So, this is one present that I don't actually intend to open. I wrapped it in 8 sheets of tin foil before the reading went back down to green. Now I did google the CPM output of the tin and from what I read I would have to wear this rock as a necklace for a year before I would experience any radiation sickness, but better safe than sorry.

U need to keep the rock in lead foil. Foil from the grocery store is aluminum and provides virtually no protection.

My daughter won a Kennedy Center competition this spring and has a week long internship in Vegas in June as a result. So we quickly put together another out west trip to pick her up. We will be staying with family in Hurricane, from what i remember St George is just around the corner. Hope to spend about a week after we pick her up collecting and sight seeing. Hoping to go to Yellow Cat, from what i understand there are a lot of hot rock in that area as well.

Happy BDay to the coolest rock chick on earth. Takes gifts in the form of rock trips and geiger counters. You guys rock, many more years. Thanks jamesp! You make me blush. I love this gift from my husband, it is both thoughtful and useful, two things I love in presents. My coworkers (ladies) just couldn't understand why I thought this was such a cool gift. But Tina loves it, I guess that is why we've been best friends for so many years. Hubby isn't as into the rocks as I am, but now that he is learning to facet, he's more interested. He lives by the moto 'Happy wife, happy life' and I try to meet my end of the bargain by giving him a happy life, so this just sort of works.

All that readily apparent. Got it all dialed in, not always easy to do. Again, many more years.
Yes, bet Tina does like y'all 's arrangement. Lady rock bud for her too. Ditto about useful presents.

They're still considered vertebrate fossils which are verboten to collecting in UT.
