Remember this? In January, I innocently (I swear) went online to purchase my first cabochon for a metalsmithing project. And THAT happened. I didn't just buy cabochons. No... Before I knew what was happening things were arriving in the mail like a trim saw, slabs, wax, templates, etc. How does that happen? I'm about to post my first unimpressive efforts on the cab board, but first I wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone for all of the information on this board. I've been lurking since January and have read hundreds of old posts. The amount of information here is amazing. A little about me - I live in Sacramento, California and travel extensively for my job. I live in a very small loft (abt 400 sq ft), so I'm limited to the amount and type of equipment I can have. I travel from June to October staying in different hotels in Nor Cal for two to three weeks at a stretch. I actually think this hobby can travel with me, so that is exciting. I plan to join a local club in October, but hope I can find some help here and not teach myself too many bad habits in the meantime... Thanks again for all of the help you guys have already given an obsessed newbie. Heather

Welcome from San Francisco! I actually make it out to Sacramento on a somewhat regular basis, and there's a lovely little rock shop there (Pearson's US Lapidary) that may not be around for much longer. You should try checking it out before it closes. PM me if you ever want some local advice or an extra set of eyes.

Welcome from the east bay. Another wonderful rock shop about 40mins southwest of you in Vacaville. If you go on a Sunday you get to meet Greg the owner and has wife - very nice people. The staff the rest of the week is pretty iffy haha.

Welcome from the L.A. area. Very nice work, especially for a first-timer. You have a great eye for pattern, balance and shape selection. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work, especially any pieces you set in your own metal designs.

Welcome to a NorCal refugee. Would love to move back up there one day. Used to live in Walnut Creek. Congrats on getting into the addiction ... er ... hobby. Paul

Welcome from Canada. I understand the mail phenomenon! You stay up late one night reading lapidary stories, experiences and papers.....and BAM! For the next week the delivery people are on a first name basis and your spouse is amazed at what is coming to the door!
Have fun!

Welcome from Missouri. The Sac club has some dandy field trips and there are a number of good shows to attend.

Thank you everyone for all of the kind welcomes!
micellular - Thank you so much for the offer. When I'm a little farther along, I would love to take you up on that offer. I'm in the Bay area quite often.
Tommy - Oh my, I looked that place up online and it looks amazing. I will definitely be visiting soon. Thanks!
radio - That's great to know about the Sac club. My hobbies are usually pretty solitary, so I look forward to meeting and learning from some folks.
Thanks again ALL!

Welcome to the forum Heather. Hope you have a great experience with everyone here. I live in Utah, and have a good size collection myself, but The cool thing about joining is getting involved in traveling Boxes, trips, and rock exchanges.
