...and I found two tiny garter snakes and a medium fox snake. I think I will keep the fox snake for a while. The little ones will be released in the back yard to grow into mouse killers.

Nice! I love snakes. The Fox Snake is beautiful, very similar in appearance to our Great Plains Rat Snakes here on the ranch. They must be very close relatives....Mel

Are in minnesota? All the fox snakes I have had and can find online have an immaculate head. Yours looks like a great plains ratsnake, but they do not seem to tangeninto Minnesota. Hmmm... Sabre52?

Yeah it is a fox snake. We had lots of them as kids. We used to have some so big that we fed them sparrows.

Nope, Not a Great Plains Rat Snake. Color is a bit more drab and the GPR has a cool looking sort of jet plain marking on the head. They are close relatives though.....Mel

I was out fishing last week for Frankenfish "caught 4" , and I must of seen at least 15 or more these garter snakes. Lucky to see maybe one every 10 years at this lake? Not sure why there was so many this spring and so early. In the water in the underbrush, which at first i thought were mice "nope not mice" Hahaha. Strangest thing.....I cant get the youtube vid to reload??

was walking to my turkey hunting spot last week on a very cool morning and almost stepped on the biggest garter snake i ever saw! I about chit myself for a second, then had to stop and pick him/her up and admire it. It could barely move it was so cold and loved the warmth of my hands

It is odd to find a snake so many hundred miles out of its normal range.

Used to pheasant hunt up in the upper Sacramento Valley, home to the Giant Garter Snake, a huge aquatic species. Used to have one almost five feet long and maybe 2 1/2 inches thick I caught up there. Big, mean, stinky pet snake. Not my favorite snake to keep....Mel

Here's a head shot of a Great Plains Rat Snake from here on the ranch. Rascal was caught climbing straight up a stone wall to raid a swallow nest....Mel

Here's one of my favorites you don't see too often... Used to survey for herps at the park down the road, photos over here if you want to see a few of Western Oregon's snakes & herps.

Ring necks are gorgeous. We have them here but they are seldom seen. Seen much more often back in Commiefornia. Hog Noses and King Snakes are perhaps my all time favorites. Baby Hog Noses are really pretty...Mel
