This is a confusing thread - I can't figure out whether black onyx is desired to fix the ring or if it even exists LOL. I definitely don't want to step on any toes but I'd like to throw it out there that I have a small slabette of what is labeled as gem grade black onyx out of Hartville WY area. It came with a very old yellowing note from an old estate collection. Again, not to step on any previous offers but I'd be willing to part with it if it were desired.

A high speed steel fluted jewelers bur would probably cut faster and do a better job of cutting out the recess in the gold then a diamond bur.

Forgive my niavete, what exactly is "onyx"? Im being sincere. I have no clue. Sorry, thought you were giving me a tough time as most Onxy is black, but there are banded varieties. Wickipedia description>>> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnyxWe do have some pretty black chert/flint/onyx/jasper/basanite/whatever here. I've read so much about it until I'm more confused than when I started. I would be happy send you a good chunk of it, so you could see if it works. This photo shows some chert in red, brown, and black, as well as black with brown skin. These samples look pretty fractured, but I have some that looks pretty clean.

A couple members sent me a few pieces of Black Jade which I think will work well for the Onyx replacement. I have the cup of the ring leveled out pretty well and will be cutting a stone or two this week.

I think the toughness of the Jade is going to be perfect for such a thin stone in this particular ring. Going to a be a royal PITA to cut and fit though!

So why not have a backup of some dark black Jasper then? I mean if you're one of the few who can cut and polish jade then by all means put that in there, but as a backup have something you know will be easier, prob just as hard, and easier to obtain if more is needed etc... Just trying to throw options out there for ya

Fortunately, no one told me that when I started working with it, so I didn't know any better The Black is new to me, but I have cut and polished a good bit of Jadeite, Wyoming Jade and even a few cabs of some killer Burmese Jade with no major problems, knock on wood! Yesterday I did a test cab of the Black Jade and it takes a really good polish on 13,000 diamond. with that out of the way, I will move on to cutting the stone for the ring in the next few days. When I accept an unusual repair, I tell them it will be done whenever I get around to it as rushing to meet a deadline often results in less than optimum results

or maybe just some black jasper (india var.) just so its a bit cheaper on you, but still hard? Black jasper and the onyx he is replacing are both quite brittle. And in this instance is a ring, jade will outlast the metal of the ring itself. This is the right solution this time. At least in my observations. Ask wampidytoo about rings made of agate/jasper versus Jade's.

hahaha there is no comparison. When I started making full circle stone rings I had big plans to make and sell agate and jasper rings. After I figured out how to do it I made a bunch and gave them away to family and friends. Not one of them lasted over two days. I had been in China the year before and knew they made the rings like this out of jade and fake jade.
I traded jade for cutting with Mel so I could try it out. As I made them I would put them on my little finger and whack them on the table ten times as hard as the pain would let me. The only ones that broke were the ones that had almost invisible fractures that I had missed.
A few that I have given away have broken but I think the reasons for the breakage was because some of the stone was not proven jade and a whack on a rock or glass will break even the best nephrite if it is thin enough. They can be whacked on wood all day long and not break though. It depends a lot on the quality of the jade and how it is cut. Jim
