What do you call the big federal road in your area? Interstate, highway, superway, tollroad... what? When I was a kid in CA, it was called a superway. Later, living in RI, it was called an interstate (after it was finally built) and even later, in FL, it was called the highway. Here in VA, we called it a tollroad, until the tolls were taken down, now we call it the interstate or just by it's number. So, like the pop/soda question, I'm just wondering how different regions refer to those rivers of asphalt.

Ole Interstate 10 round here. Runs clear back to Commiefornia. Man I drove that sucker so many times with so many rocks *L*. So much different here in Texas though. Extremely light traffic round here, almost like it's barely used. I remember back in Commiefornia, I used to almost close my eyes and scream when I tried to merge into traffic. I'm so spoiled now I can hardly stand heavy traffic at all...Mel

Interstate 95 here in North Carolina. In Arizona they would call it "The 95".

The Tidewater region is linked by bridges, tunnels and interstates. Traffic is horrific. My brother in law lives about 45 minutes north. It generally takes us 3 hours to get there on a good day and that's only one tunnel. At one time, we were ranked up there with CA for traffic. It is absolutely ridiculous. I remember after 11 you hardly ever saw anyone on the roads. Now, they are busy 24/7. We have to use the interstate to get to both my daughter's homes. One in Norfolk and one in Hampton (we're in VA Bch). As the crow flies, it' s nothing, but by interstate we plan on a day's trip to make it worthwhile.

Here in my part of Michigan, a highway would be a largish road that has a speed limit of 55. US-23 is a highway that goes through Alpena. I call the bigger roads expressways. I-75 is an expressway that goes from here to Florida. At least that's what we call them in my family.

The bigger question is, why do you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?

Interstate 95 here in North Carolina. In Arizona they would call it "The 95". And we have "the 5". AKA I5 Generally I refer to the 50+ MPH state roads as highways.

@shotgunner said it. Freeway.
You lived in CA & called it a superway? Never heard of that all my years in CA. But Southern & Northern are 2 completely different states! Lynn

Yeah, I was a little kid and it was pretty new. I used to have to take it to get to school. (I was bused when busing was new.) It was in SoCal. But, maybe it was a kid thing. That's what we called it. I was in elementary school.
