[ IMG]http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160701/1483a4db2ff43683cf6eba37403d8a6b.jpg[/IMG] James posted about heating rocks. So now whenever I have a fire I put my rocks in a cast iron bowl and in the fire it goes. By the time the fire starts and when it goes out its been in the fire about 5+ hours. The rocks that are my base has seen heat for months. I have no pics of the end result yet because I can't tumbled or cut any yet, but real soon. Some of the base rocks in the 2nd pic, the rocks are dark red. You can see those. I did have a piece of Quartz I cut about 1x1x3 and it turned a solid white color. I will post all the rocks after they cool and I can touch them. Oh, the bottle caps you see are from liquid refreshments.

Because. What, never had a sense of adventure? Try new things? For the sole purpose of seeing what's on the other side? Good thing somebody does. Otherwise we would have never had a dose of aspirin let alone antibiotics or vaccines.

Remember to put a bed of sand then rocks then more sand then build the fire on top. Don't uncover the rocks the next day, let them cool slowly so they don't crack. Also heat is slower by burying in sand so the rocks internal moisture drys and they dontbexplode, craze or potlid. Heat usually turns things nicer colors and makes the rocks break better for flint knapping!

If you want to separate big chunks of fractured quartz you can soak it in water then freeze it overnite and then toss it into a pot of boiling water!

Even the native Americans were smart enough to heat rocks so they were easier to knap. Jim

Not my favorite Rolling Stones' album...interesting idea. Do all rocks change with heat? I have a lot of tan jasper that I might try this on.
Thanks for the idea.

My nephew bought a bag of dirt at one of those find a gem places. He found a piece of clear Quartz and one of the people said it was Aqua ( something) but it was clear. They took it and heated it up to 500 degrees C for 4 hours. The quartz turned into a blue color. And JanesP posted about heat treating rocks. So this is a try to make something out of nothing. If you never try anything ... Then you will always lose. What's it cost to try?

I've heated jasper in a pan of sand in a toaster oven. Slowly. Turned a nice red. Fun to try it!
You have a good fire going there, just add marshmallows on a stick and you will have delicious s'mores : )

Yes, marshmellows, gram crackers, and chocolate. Good s'mores. And maybe even so good colored rocks, if your lucky. But even if you not lucky, what did you lose...nothing, nothing at all...say it again. War....
Oh, also... Some cold beer. Makes a bad day/night...good.
