Lately I have been enjoying making more complex cabs that involve carving activities. This one is my latest one. It a Royal Aztec Lace Agate that is 3-1/2" tall. My wife says it looks like a seal sitting on a rock. I was just shaping it to remove the small fracture and pits, not to make an image. Bob

Very cool! It's like a purple flickering flame. The purple flame of love crafted by the expert hands of bobby1 for the love of his life, his lovely bride. Show her that and maybe the seal will be forgotten...

love the design! What do you use to shape it?

The basic outlines were shaped on my 8" grinder. The curves were carved with a flex shaft using the 1" silicon carbide "Mizzy" wheel run dry. The sanding was done on a 3" wide silicon carbide belt on an expando wheel. I use 220 and 400 belts that are very well worn. I hang the edge of the belt about 3/16" over the edge of the wheel and roll the curves over this edge. The belts conform very well to the inside of the curves so they get sanded very smooth. I hang these curves over the edge of my 12" carpet covered polishing wheel and it does a fair job of polishing inside the curves. I finish the polishing in the curves with a small (1/2") soft wood wheel on a flex shaft using Rapid Polish. Bob

What a beauty, Mr. Bob! And, of course, your wife is right (Aren't they ALWAYS right, after all? ) . The cab does look like a seal. Adrian

That's a gorgeous cab, whether it be a seal or flame.

That is interesting. I really like it.
I am a bit of a noob. You said you "carved" this? Does this mean that you cut it with a dremmel or something like that?
Thanks!

I did the basic outline on a cabbing machine, in this case an 8" home made machine. I did the inside curves with a flex shaft machine (Foredom) using 1" silicon carbide "mizzy" wheels run dry. I sanded the inside curves on an 8" expando wheel with the well worn 220 belt hanging about 1/4" over the side. I polished the majority of the cab on my 12" carpet covered wheel. I polished the inside of the curves with a 3/4" wood wheel on a small mandrel using my flex shaft machine. The polish was rapid Polish. As you can see it was a combination of standard cabbing techniques as well as carving activities. Bob
