As instructed, I'm introducing myself. I'm David and new to this group. My wife and I live in Fresno. My day job consists of being the partner in charge of the tax department of a local cpa firm. I fill my day with tax problems and dealing with the IRS. I have always had an interest in geology and this group looks like it will further my fascination with the subject. I had a geology class in college where we had a field trip to Yosemite National Park. It was amazing what you could learn about the landscape just by what rocks were lying around. The landscape told a story. The rocks told a story about how they were created. A boulder could be sitting in one place for thousands of years. Mind boggling just thinking about the millions of years it took to create some of our geologic treasures. I have the same sense of wonder about astronomy. Some rock orbiting around the universe for eons!!
I finally broke down and bought a 2 barrel tumbler from Harbor Freight, my favorite toy store. Haven't plugged it in yet since I'm not done with my due diligence. I downloaded the pdf on tumbling from Shelbee. And based upon that info I need to get some additional tumblers so I can segregate the different stages and cut down on cross contamination. I'm also working on getting my first batch of stones to tumble. I have a trip planned to the north coast of Oregon and would love to find some agates. But I think I'm out of season for the best hunting. Still going to look and recruit my 2 young grandsons to help me look and keep them occupied.
Through this group, I've learned about Area 54 and surrounding countryside. Who knew?? I've driven past that place a thousand times and never knew what was there. I will admit it is hard to see the details of the dirt when you're driving 80 mph. I do plan to go on a field trip when I can. I also learned about Richardson's Ranch up in Oregon. That looks like a fun place to go dig in the dirt. I bought a couple of thunder eggs and geodes from Chapman's minerals on the coast of Northern California. I'm looking forward to slicing into those things to see what my prize is. Can't count on Cracker Jacks for prizes anymore!
Enough rambling. I will continue on my current quest!
