The person who made this earring pair had a shop in Branson for many years and claimed to the best known Silver "Artist" in the Midwest. These were brought to me today to replace an earring post that was poorly soldered and had came off. The pic is of it's mate and shows the flaws in the silverwork. The bezel was soldered to the backing from the outside and not inside causing excess solder to be visible around the join and had not even been sanded smooth prior to polishing. The silver backing is flimsy 28 gauge and was far from being symmetrical, especially around the point of the stone. Leaving silver outside the bezel like this is one of my pet peeves! In some instances, it can add to the piece, but it is more of a shortcut and time saver than anything. It takes extra time to trim and file the backing flush with the bezel, so many smiths (Artist's) leave the shelf, but usually at least take time to make sure the piece is balanced. Edit: Forgot to mention this is at least a half dozen pieces of his that I have repaired in the last 2 years Rant over and off soap box. Please carry on

Seeing that one makes me feel better, lol. Thanks Chuck LOL! glad you found it encouraging Not exactly the quality one would expect from a "World class Silversmith" demanding insane prices.

Have a gander at some etsy pieces. Lord have mercy- how they sell some of their pieces is beyond me. I have seen some of the most awful work. And, the sellers seem to be proud of it, too.

On thing about repair work, it sure makes you double and triple check your own work before putting it up for sale. I would hope that if someone I know had to repair one of my pieces for whatever reason that they would be kind enough to let me know about it so I could improve my process. Frankly, I don't care for the tone of this thread at all. Let's help each other out, not tear each other down; regardless of what we call ourselves.

This "Artist" went out of business last year and in that short time I have repaired at least half a dozen of his pieces for folks. People place value in the title of "Artist" and expect a higher level of workmanship than from the average Joe who makes a few trinkets for sale.. It pi$$es me off when a sub par silversmith uses the title to peddle shoddy goods to unsuspecting folks! I have been cutting stones and smithing for over 20 years and have never once, nor will I ever describe myself as an "Artist" I reserve that title for folks at the very pinnacle of the craft, and I still don't feel I'm there yet. By the way, the set of earrings in the pic were sold to the customer for $299.00. Another example of folks being overcharged by over inflated egos

I guess it's a problem of the written word. I found the tone condescending and negative, but maybe I'm just reading more into it than I should be. It's been an interesting week on the interwebs, maybe I just need a break from it. Found my work being sold as someone else's work last night...fun stuff.

Found my work being sold as someone else's work last night...fun stuff. Oh damn, that's gotta suck! Been there, done that. I wimped out and let it go. It was just too much much trouble to do otherwise. As much as I hated to see it- my stomach actually flip flopped when I saw it- I just didn't want to go down any legal roads.

You mean someone bought one of your pieces at full price and then relisted it as their own? Did they mark it up for profit too? I would be contacting them first inquiring about the piece and asking a couple details about it then really give them hell after that. If you have original digital photos of the piece from your listing I am sure that would be a big help. Chuck
