OK, so one of the things I am learning as I spend more time on here is that I am usually in the general vicinity of knowing what a rock is, but I'm still much closer to "uh, it's a rock, right?" than I am to, "oh, my dear boy, that is a blue carnelian topaz agate with flecks of quartz and it gets that blue tinge from the high content of zinc, which lead me to believe you found that in western Utah, correct?"
So, I have been spending a LOT of time on a flagstone path that is surrounded by river gravel that's been in my yard. It has revealed treasures such as a bison tooth, some bubblegum agates and much much more. It also is still 90% leaverite, but I just haven't figured out which 10% isn't yet. So I'm going to use my "poll the audience" card.
Here is a group shot of some that I believe to be jaspers and the right 75% is a group that is very metallic/rusty. These are really cool, but I don't know if there's anything I can do to them, except to put them back where I found them.
Here is a closeup of the metallic ones:
I really am curious as to their source, is it just like a normal rock, only it has a high iron content? Is it slag? A couple of standouts from this group are here:
and
OK, so that's the metallic stuff, here are the "will they tumble?" rocks:
I put numbers on them to allow specific feedback. (It's CRAP is an acceptable response)
Of particular curiosity are #12, as I have found a BUNCH of these and they are really interesting. They are translucent, and relatively thin, but they are SO full of vugs that I don't know if it would be worth the effort to do anything to them. I have preformed one or two of these, but I have lost track of them somewhere in the tumbling process. I am curious as to what these are and where they come from, etc. They have an almost plastic feel to them, and they are always in these wedge shapes.
Also, #2 is agate (I do know that), and it is really beautiful, but it is broken up quite a bit, so not sure what to do with it. Here is the back of it, which shimmers like gold:
EDIT: Here is another one that was neat, somewhat hard to tell from the photo. Primarily, I'm wondering if these all need to be preformed before putting them into the tumbler.
Also, I can't walk two feet without tripping over 10 brown jaspers. Are these anything that anyone collects? When I first started tumbling and found a jasper, I about wet myself because I thought it was SOOOO cool, and now it seems like they're all I find. They're still pretty, and some have really neat red flashes in them, etc. but mostly, they're just creamy brown.
Thank you for patronizing me on this. I can take/post more pics, but I didn't want to load up on pictures of stuff where you're like, "uh if I wanted to look at those, I could walk out to MY yard, you idiot."
=)
