I had a work function in Scottsdale, AZ. So, I made a Rockhounding Roadtrip out of it, stopping at the following...... -Rochound National Park in NM -Round Mountain Rockhound Area in AZ - AzRockGeek's Rockhound Area (his house) in AZ -Secret Moss Agate area & Seven Springs Onyx Mine in AZ -DoBell's (petrified wood) in AZ I ended up coming home with more than 1,000 pounds of rock, mainly from the generosity of AzRockGeek! Tim gave me some of just about everything in his collection! He kept telling me that I was helping him reduce inventory, but I definitely came out on top! Quick thanks to Scott @shotgunner for hooking me up with Tim! This is my truck as I was preparing to leave! Here are a few highlights from Tim's "inventory reduction"... Tim took me out to hound at a secret location for some sweet moss agate! He also took me to Seven Springs to pick up Onyx. Thanks again Tim!!!! Stopped at Rockhound National Park in Demming, NM. Found a few thunder eggs and some really cool ryolite. Not sure what this is? After a 1/2 day in Demming, I Drove to Round Mountain Rockhound Area in Greenly County, AZ to look for Fire Agate. Following Tim's advice, I stopped a few places on the road that circles the Rockhound area. I never made it to the Mountain......there was so much Chalcedony along the side of the road, that I filled 3 buckets in about 4 hours! There is only a small % with fire potential, but it will be close to the 25 pound limit. Random Sampling..... Following advice from paulshiroma, I made a trip to Dobell's Museum to pick up some rainbow petrified wood. I came away with some awesome material and a new friend! Noah is the 3rd generation DoBell and has taken over after his father past away last year. He actually got in the hole with me to help dig out some whole branches! He loves what he is doing and will do what he can to make sure people go away happy. He is going to need help spreading the word that they are still open for business. Here are a few of the finds...... All in all, it was a great trip! Thanks again to Tim, Scott, & Paul for the great connections and new friendships!

Yeah, Tim made me haul his crap away too. Lol
Bet he gave you a rickety old wheelbarrow too. Did he at least buy you a beer?
Lol
Tim is awesome. He loves giving rocks away and it's good stuff too!!
Maybe he will take me to moss Agate too!
Welcome back Tim. We missed you.

Man o man, what do you need with all that awesome rock? You live in a fertile rockhounding area anyway. A lot of that needs to head east to the barren rock wasteland.
Goes without saying, but you hit jackpot!

Goes without saying, but you hit jackpot! Thanks, Randy! Well, I thought Texas was a pretty good place to hound until I went to Arizona! There is so much different material out there, it's crazy! It helped having Tim, a very experienced tour guide! I made an agreement with Tim that his material will not end up on Ebay, but would be shared with RTH'ers. How I will do that remains to be seen, but I am sure some of it will be heading east.

My timing to pick up material was about as bad as you could get.....Apparently every 2 weeks they do some old testement lawn watering (they flood the lawn with about 6-8 inches of water). So, the wheel barrel was pretty ineffective and we had to walk buckets of rocks through the water. It was definitely worth it! Tim is a great guy and extremely generous with his time and material! BTW.....I may have some material for a prize box, or two😉.

Holy crap, I think I'd die and go to Heaven with a haul like that! And making a new friend into the bargain, ya can't beat that! Living in South Florida, I could drive for many hours before I'd even find a rock...

Maybe AzRockGeek will add more to illustrate the antiquated method... Old testament lol

I was at an onyx spot very close to your secret moss spot. (I suspect) And had the famous fiasco with the mountain calving out from under me. There was a filthy botryoidal rock in the road as I went to go for help. By the time I was clear, I was not in the mood to go grab it. Fast forward a year and out of curiosity, I went to go see if it was still on the side of the road or in the area where I could find it. It was exactly where I left it. It was not as wonderful as I thought after it was washed by the rain. I still kept it.
Anecdote

I've said it before, but it bears repeating - the only way I'll find any rock like this in my area is when the USPS truck drops off the box. Someday there will be a trip out west. Need to rent something bigger than my Mini Cooper though - only enough room for a couple of buckets!

Don't feel bad, your not allow. Some states have nothing, it makes it a challenge. :) It could be worse, I don't know how but it could.:)

I'll tell you what young members. If you are young, single and have a decent job that will allow you to take some time off, do it. Do it while you are young. If you sit in the bar every weekend, knock it off and save some of that booze money and take a trip. Time moves real fast and suddenly you are older with a wife and kids holding you back. Don't lay on your death bed wishing you had gone to Q just once, or wishing you had gone to XXXXXXX when you had the chance.
