So Who would have guessed that on the way home from the Ren Fest that I would come across the aftermath of a hit and run with mortal injuries? And that I would end up with blood up to my elbows. The victim of the crash died while I was standing there.

Road Kill. Was it a Camel? One night, on the way to work on graveyard My headlights shined upon a Blacktail Buck As I drove by he charged, and hit my truck He broke his antler and his leg. I had to stop and render aid. All I had was an axe and a Buck Knife. I'll never forget that deer's life. Good call, Mark never said what species the victim was. Hellofa deer story.

It was a button buck and there was zero meat loss. I have never seen that before with a road hit deer.

As of 2013 here in Montana it is legal to salvage road killed deer elk, moose and antelope. They want a person to then get a permit, which gives the wardens the right to demand to be taken to the site, and they may inspect one's house/freezer at will. They make it "legal", but too much hassle/infringement for most people to deal with. So I doubt most who glean road kill mess with it.
Back 30 years ago, There was allot of deer before the virus kill off in the late 80's. One could get hunting permits for up to seven deer if one was willing to go to different places around the state where they were wanting to cull the numbers. I had a '71 Plymouth Fury III that had a huge trunk. I would take friends out late at night and we would cruise the interstate looking for freshly hit deer. We got quite a few that were good eating. One I remember well was a huge muley doe. She had been hit a glancing blow on the head/upper neck. It slipped the skin along one whole side of the deer, like it had been skinned. No wasted meat. It was against the law then, so we would gut, skin and bone them out in my backyard. Gave away lots of meat to people we knew could use it.

Georgia strict about road kills too. Maybe with a deer tag during season. Strange.

Georgia strict about road kills too. Maybe with a deer tag during season. Strange. Not weird. Otherwise it would be more difficult to convict poachers. They just claim road kill and walk away with reasonable doubt. In Cali it's illegal too. But here it's because the fruitcakes in Sacramento want to protect the homeless from getting sick on tainted meat. (JK).

As long as you get a possession tag it is legal. If authorities find you dressing the dear you go get a possession permit. It not, no bother. Right?

But here it's because the fruitcakes in Sacramento want to protect the homeless from getting sick on tainted meat. (JK). Forgot about the poacher angle. I see that angle. Georgia also has another rule relative to selling venison: In my case being a farmer I can kill deer 365 days a year/24 hours a day and use spot lights. However, I am to leave the deer where it dies. So as not to kill and sell the meat abusing my privileges. My wife pays for her 10 day National Rhodesian Ridgeback trip selling deer jerky at the Nationals for dog bait in the show ring. Nothing like wild game to perk up a dog in the show ring. Bag limit is 12 deer/year here, no need to poach or kill out of season for her jerky. But, the dog show biz is a gold mine. Lots of money to be had in selling game meat at dog shows for bait. Deer that are taken in crop protection situations are allowed to be taken to children's homes, uh, where parentless children live.(forgot name of such establishment).
