Does anyone know how to build a website? I have two applications for websites (2 different businesses). One is a new site, one is an existing site I would like to take over. I know nothing about this and would appreciate any advice you might have.

What is it you need to know? HTML / PHP / Perl / SQL / database structures?

I need to build a website from scratch. I need to understand it and be able to add/delete content without paying some else to do it.
Also, we (wife and me) have taken over an existing business and website and I need to take over this site and be able to do the same with it.
I am thinking about Word Press? I have no technical knowledge but am confident I can learn what is necessary.

Without any in-depth technical knowledge, I strongly suggest going with a website provider who offers a WYSISYG website builder. Wordpress, weebly, wix, etc. If you want a store, I suggest Etsy.

I am thinking of using Go Daddy templates to build and host the site. Anyone heard of them.
So, here's a question. Several, actually. We have our existing site hosted by Joe. Let's say I want to switch hosting services to Fred. When I sign up with Fred, what's to prevent Joe, who has all the site info on his server, from screwing with the website now hosted by Fred? Can you only have one website host? When someone types in your website address, do all requests now go thru Freds servers?

do you have a domain name?
When you purchase web-hosting, the host will provide you with the DNS server addresses. You'll need to login to your domain registar (godaddy) and update the dns servers for your domain. Once the internet DNS servers are updated (takes up to 24 hours) the domain will take users to your website at your host when they use your URL.
So long as you have updated your domain with your new dns servers for your host, Joe's website will no longer be accessible and joe will have to get a new domain.

Buy a domain and set up open cart. It's a free ecommerce set up. You don't have to get fancy with it, but if you want to you can. www.opencart.com/

www.openelement.com/ gave me the tools to create a website for my wife's soaping business www.sudzslabs.com. I had to watch a few video tutorials but I found it pretty easy to use and understand. Also, it is freeware. All the best, Michael

Also, it is freeware. All the best, Michael Fantastic work. Your bride must be quite pleased. Looks like you understand that you aren't selling soap. You are selling the benefits of the soap. Your ad copy is solid. Consider adding a 'call to action'. "Buy a bar and see the results!" Also, a "combo pack" of 3 and 6 types bundled or even "sampler pack" of 4-6 half sized bars would be solid additions. The idea behind sampler and combo packs is to increase average order value. Decreases postage as a percentage of order, less work, more dollars. Love the company name!

I know nothing about this and would appreciate any advice you might have. You really do have to use a Word Press site. Haven't used GoDaddy, I use Bluehost, but it's probably same song, second verse. Nothing to it really... Bluehost is usually a little cheaper because they don't have skimpy models to pay in their advertising...
