I've been picking up some interesting rocks for the past three years in a remote spot in the Keweenaw Peninsula. I've read about Lake Superior thunder eggs, and I've always wondered if that's what these are. I finally rough tumbled enough to half fill my Lot-O. These things are a pain in the butt to tumble. The centers appear to be quartz and there are a lot of fractures both in the quartz and in the reddish parts. The bigger rocks are all boring. Some of the smaller ones have some good banding. Here are a couple pictures of the rough rocks. Here they are polished. The ones in the back are the small ones that I took close ups of. 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15

I think #4 is my favorite, but I like those banded ones a lot too, 6 and 10. Pretty neat finds, how long did you roll 'em?

I'm thinking that what you have is a rhyolite matrix which cracked or otherwise fractured to allow inclusion of agates. Its quite similar to some of the rhyolitic material I collect in Guaymas, Sonora. My material does not have the typical Lake Superior banding, but it certainly is agatelike.

Very cool rocks. I would keep picking those up. number 6 might by my favorite. Nice to see the before shots.

I'm not sure how long individual rocks roll. The big ones take forever. Some of the smaller ones are done in maybe 4-6 weeks. They still end up with fractures everywhere.

I think you might be right about the rhyolite. I find these rocks on the same beach that I find these: I've been told by someone that this banded material is rhyolite, and, after working some of it, Drummond Island Rocks also feels that it is rhyolite. Thanks for the help on the ID.

Yes, they are Keweenaw Thunder Eggs. Some of yours are way bigger than most.

I have yet to run more than 2 or 3 of the same stone in a batch lol. I just try to up the ceramics by a lot during the final stages to hopefully keep some separation. I really need to learn some patience...
