This model with the odd barrel. Took it apart. Was easy and simple. Motor now spinning, small fan on left shaft. Pulled a rubber cap off the front panel and found a grease fitting(duh). Pumped grease into it and off it went. Wasted time taking it apart.

Getting a look at the internals must qualify as time well spent ... very simple and interesting design. What HP is that little motor?

The tumble tumblers I have get a little warm so I found some fan blades and attached it to the motor shaft and now they stay cool. Bought the blades at a flea market for 25 cents a piece. Money well spent.

Yes, familiar with it now. Those clock motors are usually 1/20 HP. The gear box output is 20 RPM which directly drives the barrel at 20 RPM. Easiest tumbler to load and check rocks in. The cap just lays on the hopper. My wife uses it to tumble lamp parts for her lighting business.

Money well spent. This motor still runs hot spice. Even with fan. So you added your own fan blade ? Wish this one had a bigger fan blade but space is limited.

I understand. I'm sure the bearings were not taken care of with oil and it is getting old. The same with my tumbler motors. I'm sure the bearings are the cause of the heat because I bought them used. One drop of oil everyday but it still gets hot. But still worth the investment.

The one thing I noticed about the Viking is direct drive and that's a good idea.

The one thing I noticed about the Viking is direct drive and that's a good idea. If you try to stop that shaft with your fingers you will fail lest you have strong grip. The little gearbox puts out a lot of torque for such a small motor. Direct drive is cat's meow. May get a price on the drive just in case. Curious if it is still available too.

Great machine and Long lasting Thanks for the confidence boost salpal48. Was having reservations about pumping money into it. Exact same thing happened on my end, grease turned to wax. Purrs like a kitten now. Factory must have used grease that hardens. Does it do coarse grind at about the same rate as a cylindrical barrel ?

Weird tumbler. Love it!! Wonder how that barrel is connected to drive? Barrel just slides on and off. Cover like a cookie jar cover, just lays with gravity. So no pressure built up at all. Wife uses it for metals that make gas and blow the cap of my PVC barrels in a few hours

Plus we all benefit from your documentation of your experience. =) Most importantly for me, it's nice to see someone else learn the hard way. I only seem to learn that way!
