Is the yellowish area translucent or opaque? What's the hardness like? have you tried scratching it with a knife?

The yellowish area is only opaque in a couple small areas And the knife test only left a silver line that I wiped off easily leaving no mark at all flic.kr/p/Q3oNGHHere's the stone with water

The yellowish area is only opaque in a couple small areas Well that answers your title question about jasper - jasper is opaque by definition although I see a lot of stuff on the internet called jasper when it's not. Maybe others will chime in on the hardness - could it be opalite? Never seen that color but I'm sure there's a lot I haven't seen.

Yeah, that is a weird color. Any chance you can make a daylight image?
Where was it found. Not good coords but zip code or something close is fine.

The fracturing pattern looks like opalite in the last picture.

Cloudy lights still sunlight. Color balance is a slam dunk that way. The yellow in sunlight pic corresponds with an iron salt. So, perhaps opal, opaline, pastelite..... I'm at the end of my knowledge. Best wishes!!

Looks like garnet again, but in some weird sort of matrix. Maybe marble?

Looks like garnet again, but in some weird sort of matrix. Maybe marble? The pink is the matrix. The yellow is the subject in question. It doesn't scratch with a steel knife. 5 or harder.
