This is the 1st Lot-o batch that I have had to send backward. I got impatient with a batch of obsidian that had been running 5 days in my polish bowl, so I tried to polish these in the regular bowl. As usual, the result of being impatient ended up with extra work. I ended up re-running these in pre-polish and polish, with decent results. After 7 days in polish, the obsidian is sitting in a bin, waiting to be re-run from 500. Just couldn't get it to polish out, probably from throwing in extra ceramics that hadn't been broken in. Normally the ceramics run with the batch from 500 on and get broken in with the batch. The obsidian batch had a little too much room when it got to polish, so I threw in some new ceramics to keep the rocks from crashing. Not a good decision. 2 bad batches, and 2 valuable lessons learned! Anyway, here are the results of re-run batch, in the "polish only" bowl. Not this kind of Rerun...... Had to be proactive with Garage Rocker lurking around here. 1. Couple Pieces of local Palm 2. 3. Some Jasper & Agate found locally 4. I think the Maroon is Hematite. Very shiny and metallic, just in a different color than I have seen before. 5. This is the bluest rock that I have found on the San Jacinto and have no Idea what it is..... 6. 7. One of the coolest rocks I've hounded in the San Jacinto. Finally tumbled an end cut from it. 8. Rio from Sabre529. Another Rio from Mel 10. Hematite. Hard to photograph! 11. Very cool Montana that I purchased from catmandewe12. The front of the above rock. Spent a lot of time cleaning the inside of it. 13. Thinking this is some sort of Kentucky Agate form Garage Rocker14. The front of the above rock. 15. A great piece of Flintridge material from spiceman16. Front of the above rock 17. Marfa Agate from AzRockGeek18. Indian Blackskin form Mel Thanks for looking through the Re-Runs! Jeremy

Very nice! The re-runs were worth the effort.
I just wish I could take pictures as well as you do.

Another really nice set. I don't think there were any that I didn't really enjoy. I would really like to find some more of the yellow-white-red rocks like you have several of here. I really love that color combination.
I think my favorites are 7,9 &14/15.
I'm out of school this week for winter break and was able to get a ride out to the San Jacinto to do a little rock hounding. I collected about 2 gallons of rocks before my ride got bored. After looking at the samples you sent I hopefully have a better grasp on what might turn out better. I was just looking through them and there are a dozen or so I'm pretty excited about.

The palms, oh yea. The Kentucky and the flint ridge.
Flint Ridge with the yellows and reds would be great a candidate for heat treatment.

X2 James on the heat treatment for Flint Ridge!
Those r a great set indeed.
I find with my Loto that leaving tumbles in final polish for more than 2 days can cause issues. Sometimes at the end of two days polish some flats aren't quite shiny. I then leave them for another 12 hours but at the end of that they come out. Some may need to be put back in the Loto again. I usually put them in the free tumbles treasure chest at the flea market anyway as a group regardless of condition, I also sell them for $1 pick your own small bag.
I love tumbling!!!

orrumI used to tumble small slabs all together. From start to finish. Had serious dull spots in center of slabs. Just the opposite happens if you run roundish rocks with with no smalls and say 25% flats. The round rocks dish out the flat areas. But you are saying if you leave them in TOO long you loose polish ? In the Viking I run polish 12-24 hours. If i leave the rocks in the vibe 2 days in polish(aO 14,000) I loose polish. What's with that ?

"throwing in extra ceramics that hadn't been broken in"
Makes perfect sense.
Rough ceramic media = Mohs 9 abrasive = scratched up rocks.
Polished ceramic media = Mohs 9 abrasive = polished rocks.
So true:
"Normally the ceramics run with the batch from 500 on and get broken in with the batch."
Question(from someone who can not polish obsidian):
If you used softer than Mohs 9 media(ceramic media) on obsidian would the media break in faster and polish the obsidian quicker ?

Hey James I don't loose polish but the rocks tend to bruise and chip. You always have some to do that but only a very few. Leave them in there 5 days and the very few gets to be more! I think the slurry gets harder to maintain proper consistency. Who knows! LOL. To each his own!

Hopefully the samples gave you a little head start. Can't wait to see what you've picked up, so please post some before and afters!

Longer not necessarily better is frustrating. "Who knows !" Stuff happens
