Good topic. Nice to have a forum of like minded individuals, so I don't feel so strange. Most times the conversation goes something like this: "you do what?" "with your kids, right?", "no?" "you make any money at it?", "no?"
then the subject changes. LOL

I've thought about making a coffee table with a glass top and a box beneath to put rocks in. I think that would be an interesting coffee table. Something like this: Rob, I've actually got something like this. Used to be nice & organized before grandkids.

I feel you brother Wooferhound. The wife unit ( captbob term) gives me grief and frequently states that I'm playing with rocks. Chaps my butt... Yes, we are all playing with rocks and thoroughly enjoying it! Invite her to join you!

I have traded rocks for fine RTH jewelry. Now that floats the Ms.'s boat. But a free standing rock/tumble is a meh. I tell her that I get sugar from women that like my rocks. That may be the reason she does not care for mine. Maybe Pat has an opinion ?

jamesp, Next year I will try to trade for some of the good stuff and see if that sparks any interest from her. I can't make the fancy jewelry on my own, so I just drilled holes and put some basic hardware on these to give to nieces. Not too sophisticated, but went over well.
Gave a couple bowls full of tumbles...a year in the making.
Also gave away a couple jigsaw puzzles made from a photo of my tumbles.
It's fun to tell people I gave my family rocks for Christmas.

Win-win! lol One thing leads to another and another... and I like that.

Thanks for that trade Pat. Happy wife and happy life. Ha, the Bryozoans. Still do not know if they are plant or an animal.

My husband is not as excited about my new hobby as I am, but he said tonight that at least my rock addiction isn't crack. That's a fine endorsement I suppose. He did say he'd make me a small shop this spring though.

How funny i think? I started a new job with a group of about 18 people, we where asked to stand up and say 3 things about our self , i stood up and said me and my family enjoy the out doors, we enjoy rock hounding as a family hobby, and I am a member of "RTH" rock tumbling hobby! And encouraged everyone to google it and they would not be disappointed, and then i started getting questions for about 10-15 min. i answerd untill the manager asked for the next person. No one else got any questions? An to my suprise a couple people came up to me on break very interested in the end the next day i brought some stuff to show and ended up getting 3 sales for 60$ a piece!an 2 more on order blew me away considering i am new to all this cabbing and wrapping,i was nervas about showing my work to the public, but many times i get that blank look like i dont get it from people when i mention rockhounding? I guess like rock hounding it's hit and miss, all we can do is educate the masses,

Funny how a hobby can effect many people in one's life. spouses, friends, strangers, lovers, partners, work associates, anyone you come in contact with Some of the saddest people have no hobby interests and that's just not good. Often pursuing unhealthy pursuits for happiness. Ever had people just give you a funny look as if you were an alien ? Rocks ?#$% (urban dictionary WT#). That is my favorite reaction. Some of my childhood friends just look at me like I am on drugs. Lost it. Off the deep end. But rock lovers can call for instance captbob whom I knew not one iota about and plan a journey half way across the country and never have one concern. We had a damn good time, the only problem we had was having to go back home. The best part of that trip was staying in Texas longer than he did and rubbing it in, eh Bob lol. Death threats ensued. Last weekend my 50 year friend stayed a couple nights and we deer hunted. We are like brothers. His vice is beer and hunting. Mine is cigarettes/coffee and rocks. He caught me not going into the woods when we were supposed to and tinkering with the rocks. He was a bit miffed, lol. rock conflict I am on left w/coffee and cigs, he is on right with hunting gear and beer.
