I haven't attempted hand carved bowls yet, but I've been thinking on it. Watched a few videos on how to make them with an angle grinder. Figure I better get to it soon, since I keep giving away the ones I buy. I think there have been six so far. If I give it a go, I'll post a freakin awesome photo of it!

I get that response a lot also. My wife doesn't really care either way. When I finish a batch she likes to look at them briefly and then goes about her business. Most of my friends and family could care less. My sister takes a little interest in it but all she really wants is to take a few rocks, which I happily give her. My students are generally interested but I think its only because they know they are getting to take some home at the end. A few are genuinely interested and that makes me happy. I had a student tell me today that he got a rock tumbler for Christmas. He said it was like mine but smaller so I think he got the Lortone 3 lber. He seemed pretty psyched about it so I am interested to see how things turn out for him tumbling his own rocks. I have a fair number of other hobbies too. I golf, fish, collect retro video games but I like rock tumbling because it doesn't take up as much time as some of the others, its something not many people do in my area, and I love the results.

We are lucky in the fact that we don't have a lot of friends to turn off/bore by our rock collecting. Now that we are both retired and in our 60's lots of our old friends have passed away, and others, like us, have moved on with their lives and we have lost touch. It seems that we only have each other to bore and that works for us both.
Although we don't tumble anything, we love the drives to the U.P. and out west to collect. We are lucky we both share the same love of the pastime. The trip there for us is as much fun as the hunt and the find. Hubby has finally got the chance to do the lapidary stuff he always planned on getting to do someday when he got old. I get the pleasure of driving to beautiful places and finding beautiful minerals and even get to wear some of the stuff he makes for me. The years of spending all our money raising kids are past. One of our daughters, whom we actually live with now, (they have a two family house) is also a rock collector and is doing cabs and stuff too. We have lots in common and I love seeing what she finds and comes up with. Sometimes we go as a family to Leelanau and look for Petoskeys. What more could a person want? I love rocks. Hubby loves rocks. Daughter loves rocks. All is well.

You're doing it wrong bro. Women are all over me once they find out I'm a rock tumbling hobbyist. It's a total chick magnet. They don't seem to care about my high paying job, expensive clothes or fancy sports cars. They just want to hear about how I create a thick slurry or what types of grit I use.
"Want to come back to my place and check out my vibrating lap?"
Works every time.

The constant rumble of the tumbler is causing problems
