Is there any way to tumble polish petosky stones to a high shine out of a tumbler? After 8 days in the polish stage, I took my pets out, washed them off and put them in a clean drum with a small amount of soap for a day to clean them. They came out of that still looking filmy but when I buffed them they came out to a matte, low gloss shine. I do not use Ivory soap in burnishing because my water and Ivory soap do not like each other and I end up with a disgusting film- I used a tiny drop of dsh soap... this works very well with everything else... just not the pets.

Looks like Chuck has the link for you. Thanks Chuck! Credit where credit is due. That thread is probably the best there is specifically for Petoskey stones. I still have it bookmarked. Chuck

I made an observation while I was buffing this last batch. They looked good, not a high glossy shine, but I actually kind of like the matte shine I was getting. I tumbled them for only three days in a medium grit and then a day in pre polish with a wash between each. I think the next time I tumble a batch, after the polish and burnish cycle I might dry the stones and then load my tumbler barrel with the stones, plastic pellets and a bunch of torn up terry cloth towel strips. I mentioned to my husband that I wondered if that might work to buff the stones... Worth a try and I can still always hand buff, what I want a higher shine on will get hand polished with Zam and the Dremel. Thanks!
