I have a small batch of brass hardware that needs polishing and was considering using a Raytech TV-5 vibe tumbler with crushed walnut shells to polish it. But was wondering if the brass residue would contaminate the barrel for use in polishing rocks later? Thought I would try just walnut shells first and if that didn't work then add some Tripoli or another mild abrasive.

I can't see how it would do any harm. If there is any residue then the grit next time you use it will scour it pretty well.

Go ahead and run it . Before I had extra vibe bowls I ran all steps in one bowl . I have a bowl for each stage now and don't see any difference in the polish . I am very careful about cleaning though . Run the brass and clean the bowl after with a load of ceramic or small rocks with borax and a good amount of water .

The hardness of brass should not affect the quality of the rock. Some brass is not very hard.

I have run copper, brass and German silver in both vibes and rotaries. Then rocks, back and forth. About any grade abrasive seem to clean all residues. I tumble with a slurry made of iron stained red clay that stains t-shirts permanently but AO polish seems to clean all stains. Copper and brass makes that black slurry when tumbled wet, it stains worse. Dry tumbling brass may be a different game, I don't know.

Well your big fire pit tumbler could be converted into a "ATLANTA RED DIRT TSHIRT" company dyeing machine. So when you have spare time you have something to do. Maybe the t shirts will cushion the rocks at the same time.

I give tumbles away to their kids, China made campfire grills and cheap 4 inch angle grinders with wire brush cups away with picked up purchases. If they have kids, it's tumbles. If Dad has the hots for grilling it is the cheap fold open grill. If they are anal about the rust they get a cheap but effective angle grinder. Perhaps a wet mud t-shirt for the young lady customers ? Are you trying to get me in thread hijack trouble Billy lol ?

However it would be quite flattering if such an event transpired. Both me talking a young lady into a wet t-shirt not-gonna-happen and getting in hijack trouble for such a reason. It has been decided that brass is not going to contaminate the barrel, correct ? I have seen people get in trouble in the corporate world and later get promoted due to their new found popularity.

Takes a massive rope just to make the drop wigglinrocks. And a 100 foot prelude drop to get to this one.

Wet T-shirt you say?
Seriously, James is not kidding about that red clay staining.
This is what I had to dig through to get the goodies he sent me awhile back:
Well worth the effort to find the prizes. Just a couple of them:
You should see what it did to my t-shirt!
