Looking at those rocks Ryan I gotta say that should be a fun batch to tumble. Lots of variety and that unknown stuff is pretty good looking too. Hope it tumbles well for you. What size tumbler you using, those look like some pretty good sized pieces. (applause - I hate small rocks) jamesp and some others have tumbled a bunch of similar granite, maybe search for those threads to see their results and whether they did anything special.

Love the Model B unit, have a few myself. No problem with rocks that size!
What is polish 1200 grit? A pre-polish step like AO 1000?

Thanks jamesp! Those are really cool lookin! The Reds are the best n lots of variety keep rockin out buddy! Granite has felspar and quartz. The felspar undercuts when I tumble it. Granite is tricky. Still looks cool.

They polished up pretty good. Going to use a chunk of granite for a Thors Hammer sooner or later. He's just sitting there waiting to jump on some littlier rocks. They're Agates so he may not like how things will go for him ..wet, dark, tumbling around, out numbered, hehehehe Wasting away daily...

I need to learn the dremmel thing or build a ginormous barrel for 6 pounders. A wet polisher for big ole Az wood.

I'm thinking that golf ball size is bout the max, I had a couple a bit bigger n it seems to take away that glassy look you look for in tumbled stone. N easy fix the wet pics still look good n 1 dry pic for contrast flic.kr/s/aHskV6PzFXAnd my polish I'm using is 1200 grit aluminum oxide (4th stage) the third stage is 500 grit silicone carbide (pre-polish) I'll gladly accept any advice n have a rocknrollin day! Ryan FWIW, you may find that you need a more fine polish if you are not happy with your final results. Most would probably consider your 1200 to be right along the lines of 1000 which is still considered to be a pre-polish. My polish is labeled "one micron" which is equivalent to 14,000 grit. Try some of that and see if you don't wind up with better results. Good luck. Dave

I'm thinking that golf ball size is bout the max, I had a couple a bit bigger n it seems to take away that glassy look you look for in tumbled stone. Oh heck no. On the golf ball size that is. I tumble fist sized and larger at will. Seldom even put a rock in a tumbler anymore that isn't bigger than a golf ball to start. With no smalls in the batch, other filler (ceramics or plastic pellets - depending on the grit stage) needs to be used. I have one 15 lb barrel running with just one very large rock in it. Experiment and see what works for you, but don't sell that barrel short if you want larger tumbled rocks. Thanks for the motivation (I really needed to hear from someone that big stone in model B's are fine) the coolest stones I find are the size of apples and up (Lil stones don't last are winters) keep rollin! I've got 3 more rolls of 1200 "polish" if I can't get a proper glass shine by then I'm movin on to the 14,000

If you are thinking you are going to finish with 1200 grit polish, you're wrong. You are, in fact, missing the final step if you are looking for a nice outcome. Order up some "real" polish...14,000 grit. You'll be much happier in the end with that grit being the final product. I'm still playing, but I'm typically going from 500 to polish (14,000 grit) and I have "decent" results. I'm still playing with durations at every level, but your 1200 is not what you want for finished product. You might as well order some now and start using it. Best regards. Dave
