Lortone slab saw, I think it is a 10 inch, but the seller says it is 12 inch. Brand new in the box never used. Model # on outside of box: 052-90 ST10. They are asking $200, and I'll have to pay shipping across the country. So....
Is this a good piece of equipment for someone new to cutting stone?
Is this a decent price?
Grateful for any advice you can provide!

Model number, as you noted comes back to a 10" saw. I was sporadically looking at saws, and this one is usually pretty highly regarded, if I recall my research correctly. $200? Where's it at? I'll buy it.

I paid $400 for a used one and drove three hours one way to get it. If you don't buy it, I will.

Brand new in the box never used.
*sigh*
They don't make that saw anymore. Buy it and leave it in the box. Probably find someone willing to pay 3 to 4 times what it cost you. Or more.

Ok, so to be clear I WANTED IT FIRST! And I found it. So there!
While I like the idea of leaving it in the box and selling it for more than I paid for it, I don't end up with the ability to cut rocks that way. That leads to pouting, which makes my lips hurt. The 12 inch version new is 4 times the asking price of this one, are you seriously suggesting I'd get close to that?
I'm in Maryland, the saw is about 2500 miles from me. Once I get the shipping quote back and decide whether or not to pull the trigger, I'll let you folks know what I am doing. If at that point I am not buying it, I'll certainly point you all to it, and you can duke it out. Sheesh, who knew rockhounds were such hyenas?!?

I've heard that you can ship things cheap by Greyhound bus. I have no experience with this, but it might be worth checking out.

What all are saying is it is not fair to the seller. They want too little, but they set the price. Unless they are fencing it...

Yes, the seller probably has no idea what they have. Inherited an estate maybe? Yes, zekester55 , I see absolutely no problem getting 3x ($600) for it without even trying. 4x ($800) might take you a week on eBay, and it might also bring $800 in a quickness. Hard to judge what others might value a never used and in box model at. Heck I'd pay $600 for the thing right this minute and I don't even want it. If you listed on eBay or the like, a bidding war final bid may surprise us all. You get it and have a couple choices - have a darn nice shiny new saw to use which you bought for a song or sell it and buy another saw and have a few hundred bucks profit to buy rocks with! Good luck getting it! Know that you have half the folks on this forum doing searches to see if they can find this saw.

Even if shipping is $100 it is still a great deal. I regularly see people in line to buy old beat up ones for $500 at shows. Probably the best equipment Lortone ever made.

We have one at the rock club and I've been keeping my eyes open for one. I would have paid twice that and felt smug about it.

I apologize for leaving you all hanging for so long, but negotiations took awhile. I received it today. It was brand new in the box as advertised. I will require a blade and a motor (1/3 HP 1725 NEMA 48 frame). I would welcome any recommendations on vendors and brands for either of those items. Assume i know nothing.
I'll also let the cat out of the bag as to my source. There is a relatively new (a year or so) app out for smartphones called LetGo. It is marketed and intended as a more up-to-date version of Craigslist, all posts are done via photo, and it allows chatting via text within the app. It is intended for local use, i.e find someone in your area who is selling X, and come to terms. It can also be accessed via the web. Is here's the thing. If you access it on the web, a pop-up will come p and ask to use your location. Decline to allow that. Then when you do your search, it gives you results for everything it has in its database. As an example, I just now searched for "Thumler." There are four Models B units for sale:
- Roosevelt Island, NY $100 - Clovis, CA $140 - Sunset Valley, TX $179 - Amityville, NY $125
Keep in mind the folks posting these are expecting a local sale, and may not want to be bothered with working out shipping. But if they are...
You might just get a brand new in the box Lortone !0" slab saw for $200! (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150014835@N08/shares/5k80Nc)
Good luck, and don't forget to send be recommendations for motors and blades!
