Just upgraded my Windows XP 32bit all the way up to Win 7 Professional 64bit. Backed up everything on a second hard drive, Formatted the drive, and did a Clean Install with Windows 7 Professional. It was a 64bit machine with a 32 bit version of XP running on it, the new OS is 64 bit. Had a few problems and it all ended up taking about 8 hours but it's all working wonderfully now and seems quite a bit faster. It took a few hours to install the 40 updates.
also a new mouse and a waterproof keyboard cause I can't control my beer . . .

Wooferhound, I'm in a similar boat. My Lenovo laptop running XP is over 10 years old. It max's out at 3 Gigs of RAM, & has lots of issues. I've ordered a refurb Lenovo W530 on eBay that has Win 7 Pro 64-bit installed. It has 8 Gigs of RAM installed & can go up to 32. It has an i7 processor with other desirable specs. $400 including shipping. Seller with 100% positive ratings. It's on the FedEx truck & I will have it today! It arrived while I was typing this. I have great hopes that it will solve all of the issues I've been dealing with for far too long. Now to find Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop CS6. I don't want a subscription to Creative Cloud. Lynn

I have two laptops running XP. Only reason I keep them alive is I have some hardware (memory stick reader for my old camera, floppy disk adapter for transferring machining programs) and also some software, that will not run with a newer OS. Can't even count the number of scanners, disk drives, CD players and printers that I have gotten rid of. They all still worked perfect, just could not use them on the newer systems. Can you say "Planned Obsolescence?" I have the same OS Wooferhound just upgraded to, Win 7 Professional (64 bit). I am still dragging my feet about making the change to Win 10. They thought Win 8 was the do all/end all, but turns out it was crap. (Personal opinions of friends and family that have tried it.) I am not their guinea pig, do not want to mess with my system only to find out I am making it worse, not improving it.
I don't understand newness for the sake of newness. If they make a system that works, they should just make small improvements to it as need be, provide security updates, bug fixes, minor stuff. Don't reinvent the wheel and change everything around until it is not recognizable. I have a newer HP inkjet printer, a year old, use it with my desktop computer. Prints, copies, scans, faxes - I love it! Fortunately, I am able to print from the two old XP laptops to it . Made sure that would wok before I bought it. I can also print from different devices (phones, tablets, etc.) to it, though I haven't done so yet. Everyone wants you to download apps for everything. I don't want to! And I don't want my android phone to keep updating apps I neither want nor use. Games, Tracebook, twits, any of the social media that fills up everyone's time and turns them in to zombies!
Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended on January 13, 2015, although the extended support (security upgrades, etc.), will continue until January 14, 2020. Less than three years from now! In an article last year, digitaltrends said it is safe to keep using Windows 7 until 2020, so long as you install all updates. You may wish to read this: www.digitaltrends.com/computing/windows-7-refuse-to-upgrade/ I think there are a lot of us in that same boat.

Opinion here; stick w/7 as long as you can. Had to go to 10 and don't think much of it, too much peripheral stuff, KISS. We have a non-internet desktop w/XP on it and use it as much as possible, has lots of older but usable programs on it, and the older hardware still works too. I find anything to do with photos to be more difficult with 10, dumb OS or dumb me

I'm still clinging to Windows 7 myself. But it is an 8 year old out dated software and I seem to be starting to have issues with the latest Mozilla and AVG updates. So I'm concerned that I may soon be forced to upgrade to windows 10 or whatever the newest system is.

Set up for too much advertising and from what I heard it is basically one massive spyware program recording everything you do or look at on the internet permanently. As for Firefox, I have has some issues lately as well with something in Firefox running in the background almost maxing out my physical memory and upping my CPU use by a lot. This makes it next to impossible to get anything done as it keeps saying Firefox not responding every few keystrokes. When this happens I just close out Firefox using CNTL+ALT+DEL to get the Task Manager. Then I open Firefox again and restore session and everything goes back to working fine for a while.

vegasjames have you checked your add ons? Sometimes they don't play well together. I use Chrome on my PC, runs so much better. Since the wife uses the laptop she uses Chrome and I use Firefox. Both are running 7 and I have no desire to go to 10. I recall Microsoft sneaking Win10 launchers into updates, got ridiculous.

I was forced to go to 10 after my 7 laptop became unstable. Try buying a new laptop without 10.
When you get a newly loaded 10, you can turn off a lot of the spying when you do the initial set up. Also, you can go to privacy settings and turn off all the spying. I was even able to turn off automatic updates. I got rid of the stupid live bloatware in the start menu. There's lots of tweaks to get it very 7ish. After a few bugs, it seems to be running ok. I still wish I could have kept 7, though.

I agree, stick with 7 as long as you can. I run 10, and it still has bugs.

What is windows?
I buy a computer and use it until it fails. Buy another one. Never even gave a moment's thought into a computer needing windows, or doors for that matter.
Does it have to have windows?

Does it have to have windows? Linux? Apple? I wouldn't choose either over windows as annoying as it can be. My bro uses linux A PITA. Apple, no thank you.

Linux? Apple? I wouldn't choose either over windows as annoying as it can be. My bro uses linux A PITA. Apple, no thank you. I believe it was humor. A very poor attempt apparently. I sell windows for a living. I don't see how they attach to a computer. Truth be told. I have owned a bunch of machines lately. The OS for me has become meaningless. Apple and not apple are very different. But they both do the same things equally as well. In my weaksauce estimate. ETA Here is how it goes for me when I bought my laptop recently for work. Open box, turn on machine, go thru setup. Go thru all "notification" and turn them off. Delete bloatware. Download Chrome, set chrome as default browser, get to work. I never use any software provided by the machine. Just chrome and stuff I see thru that portal..... Notice you can not tell what machine I bought? Cuz it doesn't matter. Chrome runs on all of them. I no longer perseverate over these things. I don't see any performance difference between them. $300 HP laptop at Walmart or a $1500 macbook..... Either way, I'm putting g chrome on and doing all my business that way.

Top right corner, right under the red X, click on it, then click on the puzzle piece that says add-ons. Click on the puzzle piece for extensions on the left side. Click on the "disable" box for each add-on, close and re-open Firefox and see if it runs better. Try enabling them one at a time then back off until you find the one that slows it down, then click remove for that one. If you don't have any add-ons go back to the add on manager and find add block plus, install it.
