Last weekend a Niece I had not seen for 60 years dropped by the shop in Branson for a visit and had her 12 YO Grandson with her. He loves rocks and had brought his "collection" along to show me that consisted mostly of tumbled stones purchased at tourist spots, but surprisingly, he knew what many of them were! He is smart as can be and really into the rock thing, but has no books or materials to help him further his knowledge. I'm looking for recommendations of age appropriate field guides and such that will help him ID things and expand his knowledge. I had several really nice Quartz crystal specimens and and other collectible thumbnail specimens and a loupe I sent him home with, so he is now hooked

Can't do any better than Dons.
I might add that providing him a list of relevant links to eye candy would benefit also.
I'm driving and dictating this so no actual links. Sorry Arlen!

Thanks all. If we lived closer, he would get some time on the saws and cab king for sure!

Ditto on the Audubon book. Mine has so many sticky notes sticking out of it a porcupine would fall in love with it. Jim

Whenever I run across a young person who is getting interested in rocks I try to give their parents a heads-up about the strong presence of the almost cult-like purveyors and peddlers pushing the "healing crystals" and "metaphysical healing and spiritual powers of rocks" lines on the internet. So that if they wish to, the parents can address this with their kids upfront before their kids get lead down that trail if it's against the parents wishes for them to do so. Because when using the internet to learn basic info about rocks and minerals the kids are going to run across a ton of this stuff.
