I've been lurking and learning here for several weeks and decided I should sign up and introduce myself. I posted in the “Introduce Yourself” section, but figured I should also post an introductory thread here, since this is where I'll be spending the bulk of my time.
First some background:
I spent my working years in masonry construction. Always enjoyed working with stone. Most of it was sandstone and limestone with an occasional granite gig. I'm pretty good with a hammer and chisel (I've split 24” thick stone into blocks using a 2lb hammer), own a small wet saw, several grinders, a dremel and have access to saws with blades up to 60”.
My grand-kids and I often pick up “pretty stones” along paths and out of people's landscaping, so I had the brainstorm to try polishing some.
Started watching eBay and got a great deal on a Lortone 3lb. tumbler that had been opened but never used. It included a box of agate, plastic pellets and single batch bags of grit/polish. Last week I bought a “lightly used” (but, as it turned out, never cleaned) Lortone 3-1.5 that came with enough final polish and pellets to last me at least until I lose interest in this new hobby.
I'm currently in the third stage of the first batch in the 3 pounder and started a course stage in one of the little barrels...and have made mistakes at every step...some even before I started! Shoulda' done more research ahead of time.
This is getting long, so I'll wait before starting a thread on all the novice mistakes I've made, in hopes that other newbies can learn from my stupidity.

Welcome. I imagine you'll probably need more polish.

Thanks for the warm welcome, folks. Dave: As I wrote earlier, I've been reading here for several weeks. (Started at page 116 and am currently on page 68.) I'm sure I'll have questions as I go along, but most have been answered here.
