I've been tumbling since Christmas 2016 so about 6 months. Had trouble getting a good shiny polish in the beginning but you guys helped me out and I conquered the 4 Step process. Then later had great success with the jamesp 3 Step AO-80 process. So now that I'm getting a little bored with it, I don't mind trying some stuff that will take a little longer. I have been running the grit steps as 60-220-600-CO polish. I am trying to get a little extra shine by adding a AO-1000 prepolish step before the Cerium Oxide polish step. Just got the AO-1000 spinning today and will let it run a week then another week polishing.
I have some glass rolling in 600 grit right now and I plan to finish it out using the AO-1000 step too.

How long did you run the 600 for? Personally, I decided to forego the "prepolish" stage of 1000 by letting 500 go for two weeks. If I was using 1000, I might only roll in 500 for one week. Just curious.

I have run the 5 step tumble a few times and I can notice a slight difference for the better. These rocks have been done for a long time now but were lost and were the subject of a Lost Rocks thread. Now that I am used to rock tumbling and not so anxious to see results, I will be adding this extra step. Here is one of the better batches using 5 steps . . . Some cool rocks that I found at the Family Dollar store Some rocks from an ancient flower bed that doesn't exist anymore South Carolina Quartz

when I rotary tumbled I did SiC 46 SiC 220 AO 500 AO 14,000. 8-10 days for 220 and 500, 10 to 14 days aO 14,000. I used sugar for a slurry thickener in 500 and 14,000. 3 cups for 16 pounds of rock, 75 to 80% full. About always Mohs 7 agate wood and coral.
Did so many loads, blindfolded. Over and over, same recipe. 4 - 16 pound 6" barrels at ~30 RPM Bought a vibe, better than a 30 year old wife.
