At our club's recent general meeting I did a demonstration on how to do some carving from the back of a cab. This was my first attempt to do a presentation with out new video camera and projector and it worked very well though we need to improve the lighting. A couple days ago I finished the work on the cab and this is the result. It is 3" tall and made from Milky Chalcedony. I am working on my Windows Photo gallery feature to resize photos so I can post them here and rid myself from that evil Photobucket! Bob

Interesting stone pattern with the swirl accentuated by your work. Doesn't even look like stone..

Bobby, nice stone. Those Optical Dishes are mostly associated with the work of gemstone artist Michael Dyber who introduced that style in the 1980s. They've been widely used since by many other well known facet cutters like Dalan Hargrave, John Dyer, etc. I think they can add a lot of interest when used in cab work too.

Fire opal would be a candidate. Bob, love that! Or nice clear carnelian. Maybe even a filament moss agate with good clear agate. Would be very Barbarella....OUCH, just showed my age... Craig

You are pretty good at getting outside the box but this one is outside of the building. I love it and hope to try one but it looks to me like it is really tough to get those spots spaced and lined up correctly. Your impeccable work is always a pleasure to look at. Jim

Jim, It did take a bit of effort to make sure the holes were aligned up. In my monthly "Bench Tips" article in Rock and Gem Magazine I share the details of making one of these. It should be in the next (September) issue. Bob
