I've had this thing sitting on a bathroom shelf for a while now and never really gave it much thought until I found a few stromatolite fossils last week. Material is probably rhyolite/jasper, but I was wondering if this patterning is caused by flow banding or some kind of fossil(eg. stromatolite, wood, etc). It doesn't really look like wood grain or a stromatolite, but I figured I would ask because I haven't seen flow banding this thin before. As usual, this specimen is from glacial till in MN. More pictures of dry specimen and other sides can be found here: imgur.com/a/wne4W

Cool. I am finding similar in WI. I just thought it was banded jasper. It does look similar to some types of petrified wood "root balls".

Could be, but as usual when I google things nothing looks quite like what I have.

IS an interesting rock for sure. HAve you ever worked any of it" Cut or tumble. How hard? Like a jasper or softer like rhyolite? Would have guessed the same s you before but now someone will recognize it Maybe Rob Jugglerguy knows, he's a Michigan troll and is smart, gets around too. Hey Rich, sometimes Dale and always wigglinrocks do you find this in Wisconsin or is it just a mudpuppy rock?

Yeah , we find a few of those . Think Mel is correct , a layered stromatolite jasper . Hard and purdy polished . I think toiv0 took a couple of them away from me when he swung through .

I don't have the equipment to cut things and my tumbler broke a while ago. This rock wouldn't fit inside it anyways. D: I'd imagine you could probably find this stuff anywhere the glaciers dropped stuff off so WI too(except driftless area).

All the rock in my area is stuff the glaciers left behind , well north of the driftless area .

Maybe 4" x 3" x 3". Prob around 2 lbs, but I haven't weighed it. Yea everything looks pretty good when polished up, its just getting it to that point that's hard for me. At least when I get some equipment I know I'll have some decent material.

I just look for agates mostly and sometimes i trip over these other things or get skunked and start picking up any rock in sight

I also know what ya mean about not wanting to come home with an empty bucket . I pick up rocks that show a possible potential and sort at home , use the junk for filling low spots along the driveway .

That is not ugly, IMHO. How big is that? Thanks for posting the algae fossils. I think I have found many of those as well. Just liked the pattern, so saved them.
