I got my first exposure to the hobby in 6th or 7th grade when my parents gave me a second hand toy tumbler that didn't have all the right grit and instructions. With the noisy plastic barrel and tossing pretty much anything into it I could find, it was a recipe for failure after just a few days. Fast forward a few decades, and two of my kids are showing a lot of interest in rock collecting over the last few years, and my younger son really wants a tumbler for his birthday. We took the kids out this past weekend to collect rocks on some Lake Michigan beaches, figuring that starting with smoother stones would set us up for a good first tumble. His birthday is next weekend, so we'll see how this goes from there...

Welcome from the other side of the lake in Michigan. I bought a tumbler for my son when he was twelve. It kept his interest for a couple years and my interest for longer. Insider a Lortone 33B from The Rock Shed as a good first tumbler. Mine has been running almost continuously since 2012.

Greetings from Vermont! I'm no expert (on anything)and I am a returning tumbler also. I have been happy with my Lortone 3A. It is SO much quieter than the plastic barrel thing. You may want to look into getting the Lortone 33B, which has two barrels -- one for each son.

Welcome aboard darter. North of you in Cedarburg is a pretty good rock shop. The Gem Shop Inc. Finished material in front. Rough rock out in the backyard and down in the basement. The carnelian they have is nice and so is the ocean jasper tumbling rough. Much more as well and so much fun picking through the barrels ....
