No idea of what is the best formulation. Buyer beware though. Looks like the quality of common aluminum oxide ceramic media is rated by densities of 85-90-100 pounds per cubic foot. Aluminum oxide is common cheap and effective. Most likely the one sold at tumbling supplies. The other ceramic oxides have their own attributes. Ceramics complicated. Doubt much research has been done for the rock tumbling clan. Some ceramic media has sharp silicon carbide particles in it for fast cutting. Probably not good for vibratory tumbler barrels. Nor for rock polishing.

It would be interesting to be able to document the various types in regards to tumbling, but when was the last time anyone bought a ceramic and knew what type of ceramic it was?

I use pieces of toilet tank ceramic left from knapping. They polish up nice in the Loto. Sometimes I pit interesting pieces in my tumbles for give a way to children plus I sell a lil bag for a dollar. You should see how quivk folks pick the ceramic to put in their bag.
