I'm Rick. I'm retired and just got involved in this. We're having a lot of fun though we don't really know much yet. lol We're still tumbling our first find. It's on step 2 right now and we're excited to see how it turns out. Now that we have the bug, we're leaving tomorrow for another trip to the coast. Hopefully we'll find some nice agates. I still can't identify different stones very good though. I have much to learn.
At any rate, finding this forum has been great! Thanks to everyone who shares their expertise here. I've already packed away lot's of useful info!

Hi Rick, welcome from Michigan. I’ve been at this about five years now and I still can’t identify much. That hasn’t stopped me from shining up a bunch of rocks though!

Welcome! Best thing with CA beach rocks is to take a pocket knife along. If the rocks won't scratch they are hard enough to tumble. Most will polish though there are some pesky green ones I never had luck with.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the nice welcome. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute something in the future. Rick - any good rock shops up your way? I have a son who goes to sac state so we have a built in reason to head up there ... and look for rock shops while pretending to visit him Have you ever caught the gem and mineral show put on by the Roseville Rock Rollers club? It's firmly at the top of our list of local shows. It's a big show - I typically spend four to six hours working my way through it deep-picking for treasures.

Hi Tommy, I'm too new at this to know what is out here. We did stop at a shop named Pearson's and the owner was very helpful to us. Unfortunately for us, they are retiring and closing shop. If they're not closed yet, you might want to check it out. They had also mentioned Roseville Rock Rollers to us.

Some are kind of dull but others are shiny and kind of translucent. I found a couple that are very nice. I'm anxious to find out what they are see how they turn out.
