I have an older Dremel but I'm in the process of upgrading/adding equipment. Any favorite? I'm going to get the drill press and flexible cable, too. I'll use this to clean up rocks and attempt to drill holes.
If you use Discover, they have 5% Cash Back from now until 12/13. I'll use up that $1500.00 max in a hurry! I'll uses the RTH banner to order, too.

I like my two Dremel 8220 (I have one usually connected to the flex cable, and one ready to grab as needed)... You might also want to consider an extra battery or two, and an adjustable chuck. I also have the drill press, however I have yet to use it... maybe when I learn to drill holes - Lol! Glenn

Since you're upgrading, skip the Dremel and think Foredom. Flexshaft is built-in, and they have a drill press as an accessory. Plus it will keep the motor away from the water, which is necessary for cutting, grinding or drilling rock.

Agree with unclesoska. Foredom is tougher, won't wear out like the Dremel does.

Thanks for the advise. Those Foredom look nice but I don't think I'm at that level, yet! I'm still buying tumblers and wanting a small saw.

Win, It was nice meeting you at the Moab show. I love that town and that show. It's consistently my best saleswise. I always buy great Dino Bone from the locals. I got to rockhound on Monday on the way home. I hounded grape agate just east of the San Rafael Swell. Foredom is pricey, but Harbor Freight has a Chinese clone for about $50-60. I can't find it on their site now. Maybe they don't anymore. Here's a mini bench grinder with flex shaft for $38! Add the 20% off coupon & it's $30. www.harborfreight.com/bench-grinder-with-flex-shaft-43533.htmlLynn

Thanks, Lynn, that was fun out there! No intention to rockhound but did get some unusual Agate in a wash, totally by accident. Might have to make that yearly trip. I'll check out Harbor Freight, I might go to ST George tomorrow, one of my three yearly trips.LOL

My customers back East love that I'm in Utah and then when I say Toquerville they get a good laugh.

Win, I use the Drelem 8820 with flexshaft and adjustable chuck. The flexshaft and chuck are absolutely mandatory for me. Next time though, I'd get the "plug in the wall" model rather than the battery model - doing jewelry work, I have to swap out for my extra battery about every half hour of motor run time. Also, a foot pedal would be really sweet, that's another advantage of the Foredom (or foredom-style) machines. They are always selling Foredom knock-offs at our rock shows around here, don't know if it will last. The Dremel has lasted just fine for metal work - doesn't strain the motor too much, plenty of power. 5 years ago I said I'd use the Dremel "for now, to see if I like the hobby", and it's still going strong. I want it to die so I can get a micro motor with a foot pedal and a/c power, but it won't die!

I picked up the small grinder w/flexshaft at Harbor Freight. Not sure how it will get used but I have an idea for my wife to experiment with. I ordered the 8220, needed a new Dremel anyway.
