As of now we are planning to go next month for a day. Well go Saturday and come back Sunday. Any of the pay mines any good? No seeding of foreign stuff, hate that. How about and creeks or streams we could collect from? Not looking for anything requiring tools, just something fun to do for a couple of hours.

Kevin, on the road from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg there is a large creek that runs between the 4 lanes. There are places to pull off that people use to trout fish. Never rockhounded there so don’t know if it’s productive. Most of those sluice mine operations are seeded. There are some actual pay mine sites over in North Carolina.

Just be careful you don't take anything out of the National Park. I think that section of creek is ok, but not positive. The rock shops are always fun to look at.

Between I-75 and Gatlinburg Are mostly Ordivician sediments. As you get closer to NC you get into metamorphics. Up near Johnson City in the area between there and NC you can get unakite (in the unicoi Mtns). I am not overly interested in Ordivician fossils so I have spent little time looking up in that area. The Unakite I have found further to the NE was not as nice as I found in PA or could purchase so I have not persued it. There used to be an orange jasper near Bumpass Cove that has pyrolusite dendrites. I only have one small piece of that. I have not hunted Bumpass Cove since it is a 4hr drive from me.
