I picked this up from one of the vendors at the San Diego Mineral and Gem BBQ and Silent Auction at the end of May, along with another 20 or so lbs of other rough. I ran across it on my patio the other day, and wondered what the heck it is. Best way to find out? Ask the well informed people on RTH for their thoughts.
Brightly colored, looks like it will take a great polish. You can see a conchoidal fracture in the shadow on the right side of the rock.
conchoidal fracture
As you can see, he doesn't quite have his blade set correctly
Only this one side has a crumbly, somewhat grainy surface.
There's that conchoidal fracture again. I took these pics on two different days. They are straight out of the camera, not juiced.
Tried to keep it wet for the photo, but it was just too blasted hot!
Because of the vivid coloring, I originally thought Crayola jasper. But it doesn't look anything like the images on Google, guess that is more of a rhyolite/wonderstone.
Thoughts, anybody? Thank you! Jean

I can't help with the ID, but I have a question, do agates break concoidally? Glass, obsidian and chalcedony all do, but I don't remember agate breaking like that. But some agates are used in knapping...so I'm confused.

Might think different if I had in in hand but from the pics, it look to me like Morgan Hill poppy jasper that didn't quite develop poppies or where the poppy sections are broken up yielding those crescent formations. You see that in both Morgan Hill and Hornitos poppy types quite a lot...Mel

Thanks, Mel Sabre52. The colors do sorta scream poppy jasper, but definitely delinquent on poppy development. Once it cools off a bit, will let it talk to the saw. See what's on the inside of this puppy. Yeah, I think we are all pretty saw happy around here. How else can you get to see the innards and what makes it tick? Cut it, cut it, cut it, lol....

I also used to think it was just glass and obsidian that broke that way, but time has shown me it can be any "glassy" material. As long as it is fine grained, it can fracture that way.
