As some may know I’m currently at William Holland with only 2 hours in the morning to finish 2 very important cabochons. The one I’m having the most trouble with is getting a polish on a beautiful piece of variegated tigers eye. I’m sorry I don’t have a picture but I can’t find any apparent scratches, I’ve taken it up to the 14k genie wheel and still no real shine!!! It’s so frustrating! Can anyone give any advice? rockjunquie, fantastic5, Tommy, 1dave, @shotgunner, zarguy ?

I had a text discussion with Mel. I'll share the highlights somothers can benefit.
A) worn wheels may be the cause B) too much pressure from worn wheels may overheat the stones. C) Mel loves intarsia D) she made me blush....

Try sanding and polishing at right angles to the direction of the fibres, Light pressure too.

Yeah, what Pauls said. Tiger Eye is fibrous and sanding can loosen and rough up those fibers. You kind of have to treat it like jade. I personally prefer worn wheels for tiger eye rather than fresh sharp ones and light pressure with lot of movement so as not to tear loose those fibers. That being said, Tiger Eye usually gives me fits too. I love to tumble it but hate to cab it *L*....Mel

Thanks guys! I’m going to finish my intarsia piece and try giving the TE a final polish. If that doesn’t work when I get home I’ll throw it in the tumbler.

TGIF for me here at work, but dang, sorry its your last day of your last class at WH. I want to take another class next year (either another silver or maybe cold connections). Maybe we can align weeks. Make sure you post pictures of the weeks work!!

fantastic5 it’s mighty chilly here and yes you always wish for at least one more day! I’ve fallen in love with a Silver inlay class I’ve checked in on a few times. You’d love it too!!

Hi Mel - sorry for the slow response - it's been a dell of a hay. Yeah, tiger eye and me don't get along really well either - since I don't tumble very much I pretty much stay away from it. On the other hand tiger IRON is the bomb if you get the right piece. Just enough fibers to keep you on your toes but generally easy to work with - and it looks nice too. I had a gorgeous tiger eye cab in my possession recently as part of the super secret hush hush RTH Challenge - I can't remember who made it - was it meviva?

I’ve only ever made two tiger eye cabs. One I entered in the September cab contest and the other is off to places unknown, anxiously awaiting a super secret splashdown. I thought it was very easy to work with. Maybe because it was normal tiger eye or maybe the way it was cut. I didn’t see any fibers. I used Tin Oxide to polish and it was super shiny. Andrea
