Nice group of cabs. Which machine are you using? Welcome to the wonderful world of cabbing..... or should I say welcome to the addiction?

Nice group of cabs. Which machine are you using? Welcome to the wonderful world of cabbing..... or should I say welcome to the addiction? I am starting out with a modified Genie. Went to 2 wheels vice 3 to open it up a little. Got it cheap, had to replace some stuff, a couple of new wheels, and the extra spindles. I am liking it so far, but will do a bit more work before I start in on my better slabs.

The preform for the snowflake obsidian was cut by my dad about 50 years ago. It was fun to have the connection when finishing it.

Great job. love the snowflake
Don't be scared to try some good stuff too. I teach cabbing at my club and I always have an assortment of good quality material in my tool box to give to students to use for their first couple of cabs. It just makes it so much more special if their first finished gem is a gorgeous stone.

You've done enough cabs now that you get the general idea. Now it is time to make it (even) more fun! If later you decide you don't like how you domed one or something, you can always redo it.

You’re off to a great start! Yours are far superior to my beginning cabs.
Peace, Rich

You're doing great! I don't know what your "good stuff" is but I agree with a little caution and experience before tackling irreplaceable material. I made some big mistakes when I was starting out that I now regret. Every cab you cut adds to your experience base and if you pay attention to your mistakes you'll progress rapidly. I think having a link to your Dad's work is wonderful. I've had the same experience working with materials from my own Dad, and those stones have a very special meaning for me.

Welcome! Lovely cabs for your first ones. I can see you'll be cabbing your good stuff in no time and we'll all be waiting to see what it is.
Thanks for sharing your picture.

yes you are doing great, my first machine was a rock rascal combo unit. I have since graduated to a 6 wheel unit and what a difference.

Going from a rock rascal to a 6 wheel diamond unit is like going rock hunting on a motor scooter then later going rock hunting in a 1ton FWD Pickup. Mmmmmmuch Better!!!

yes you are doing great, my first machine was a rock rascal combo unit. I have since graduated to a 6 wheel unit and what a difference. I just bought a used rock rascal combo. Getting it running (new blade and shaft). Better than the hour drive to the club but a way to start. Fishnpinball looks like like you are about 5 cabs ahead of me. I Made snowflake obsidian cab but can’t get a good polish on it - looks like a flat dark grey
