The Botryoidal is my favorite tumbled stone. The mixture of colors and contrasting white background really appeal. May have to see about collecting it sometime, you know move some weight back to Texas! The Rio is very nice. Model B tumbled? what kind of mixture did you have with it? Henry

The corals are crazy cool. Glad you posted them. The Rio is the biggest tumble stone I've ever seen ... Unless I've forgotten seeing another.

Good to see some captbob tumbles. Those bots are an easy tumble, and shine like no tomorrow. Coral shines fast, but those bots are pure solidified silica that leaches into coral to solidify it. Might be the hardest silica on earth. Did you pull some and add some as you went ? They have a sweet spot in coarse tumble where they look the best. Fine collection of bots.
Never tackled a rock that big. I have trouble with polish above 2 pounds. Maybe 100% tiny media would get the polish done. curious what you tumbled it with media wise.

Loving those botryoidal corals! I imagine they are a lot like snakeskin agate, in that you have to watch them closely in the tumbler so you don't over do them. A very generous person in Florida (thank you!) sent me some snakeskin, and after I finally got around to tumbling some of them, I overdid three of them. Oops. I still have more to play with, will keep a closer eye on them! Thanks for posting the pics, captbob!

Thanks all. The corals, as I said, are a piece of cake to tumble. I ran them in coarse 60/90 for awhile to remove a layer or two, a month in AO 80 and then a 2 months in polish. Probably over ran the polish stage, but it doesn't hurt anything to just let 'em run. Corals can be a bitch with the ceramics getting stuck in them! Didn't take much time watching them, it would have driven me nuts wondering when to pull each piece... should it run longer? Very much like snakeskin agates. Hard to say what the sweet spot is for each piece. The big Rio I just ran with ceramic media. It was too big to add other rocks to the barrel. Figured that if I used rocks for filler that they might jam against the big 'un and stop it from moving in the barrel. It's that big that there was little room left on the sides in a 15 lb barrel.Took forever just using ceramics. Went the first 5 months with no noticeable change then bam it was ready to move on. Ran 4 months just in polish stage. Unimpressed with polish. Needed smalls (rocks) in that run I believe. Thinkin' that ceramics alone didn't give me enough impacting with the rock to lay down a nice shiny polish. Figure that when I get a 40 lb tumbler I will do another polish run on it to see if I can get a wet shine on it. Just because. A 40 pounder would allow me to tumbler bigger corals too. Something I want to do. - Hey Santa!! Have another (red) Rio somewhat under that size running now. Smaller, although 5+ pounds. Small enough though that I could add some small rocks to the mix. Been running since last May - still in 80 grit. Think it will be much nicer than this big one. Prettier rock anyway. Sure I could have done it faster, but I only check on it every month or so. Keep pulling the smalls to move on and adding new smalls. Time will tell ... Que Sera, Sera aside: this is a local craigslist ad tampa.craigslist.org/hil/for/d/commercial-rock-tumblers/6397201544.htmlthinking about picking a couple of these up. Then i would just need to buy the 40 lb barrels. Freakin' things are 3 feet long each. Take up a lot of room. Wife will LOVE them!

Seems like a steal of a deal. Bet that tumbler pulls some serious electricity to run though.

Those corals are badass! Shame a guy can't find material like that on the market. Great tumble.

Those coral tumbles are friggin awesome. If you put a tray of those out at a rockshow, they would sell like hotcakes. Matter of fact, I have some my wife brought me from her Florida trip around somewhere....Mel

Those corals are great. I applaud your efforts on that RIO. Not many folks can say they have tried a rock that large. Might be the largest tumbled stone I have ever seen. Nice to see pictures of your tumbles.

I’m a little late to this but, Wow! What a great bunch of corals. That big one is cool too. I can grind one with my wet grinder, but I can’t tumble anything nearly that size.
