Thanks. Thanks a lot. I had no spare time, and no spare money to begin with. Now the new hobby is making life even busier, and more expensive. Should say 3 new hobbies...rockhounding, rock polishing, and...rock photography. Up until now, I've been hooked on nature photography (mostly birds), but lately I find myself putting on the macro lens and shooting rocks most of the time. Last week I saw tkvancil's really cool pics of some Mexican Crazy Lace. Since I'm new at this, I'd never heard of such a thing, but holy cow is it cool material. So now I've crossed another line. After ONLY self-collecting material since we started in June (almost always out on the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands), I actually paid cold hard cash for...a box of rocks. Yeah, I know for you guys that's no big deal, but it's a new development for me, that my wife can't quite understand. Got the shipment of Mexican Crazy Lace today, something I definitely am tumbling soon, but the first thing I wanted to do...rock photography! Starting to fill up my hard drive with rock photos. What can I say? Nature is beautiful and infinitely variable. Your fascination with Mexican crazy lace will only increase once you slab and polish them. With a shine they present new photographic challenges, but I'm sure you will rise to the occasion. I would post more of my work if I was a better or (more patient) photographer. So get going and motivate me (us).

I don't know what I enjoy more, the finding and digging, the cutting and polishing or taking photographs of the results. As I get older I find the photos are much easier!

I don't know what I enjoy more, the finding and digging, the cutting and polishing or taking photographs of the results. As I get older I find the photos are much easier! I'm also finding rocks are much less likely to fly around and screw up your pictures than are my normal subjects...birds. :-)

I do a lot of nature/landscape photography but haven't concentrated on rocks, yet. I have my macro sitting next to me, with a ring light and haven't got to the rocks. You did an excellent job, inspiring me to get to it!

dakotabirder that Crazy Lace is so beautiful just as it is, I can hardly wait to see what it becomes! Glad you're migrating from birds to rocks. Can't have enough rock porn IMO.

May or may not be more difficult than birds, but rocks are definitely much easier.

Love the Crazy rocks and your photography. As a former professional photographer, of mostly domestic farm animals for registration, I agree. Given the correct equipment, rocks do not move around nearly much as other subjects can.

Those are great rocks and great photos. Where did you get your rocks? I ordered 25 lbs from Kingsley North, but my wife made me wrap the box for Christmas before I got to open it. I’m hoping mine look as good as yours.
