when calculating the amount of grit do you add the weight of the rocks to the weight of the ceramic media to come up with a total weight and the use the 1-2 lbs per pound?

How big is your tumbler? I use by the tablespoon. A 3 lb. barrel gets 4 tablespoons of 60/90 for 1st step.

My stage one grit calculations are based on the barrel being used. I have never weighed the rocks going in. 3 pound barrel 3-4 tablespoons, 6 pound barrel 6-8 tablespoons, 12 pound barrel 12-16 tablespoons. I use a vibe tumbler for all other stages so no help there.

i am going to put about 5 lbs of emerald-sapphire-garnet-quartz mix in the uv-18 and the rest will be either ceramic media (i have been using pea gravel on my reqular sized rocks but thought it would be hard to seperate from the semi-precious stones) any other media that would work an dhow much grit for the 220 stage and on?

I recently got a Mini Sonic vibe and it is for finishing, use grit and polish by the teaspoon.

Ceramic is best for media. You'll need a lot to fill the UV18 after 5# of rock. Already tumbled small rocks work too. In my UV18 I use ... 220, 8 tablespoons All finer grits and polish, 3 tablespoons.

You should tumble the ceramic media to break down the sharp edges. I have quite a bit of ceramics, I did buy a 4# barrel. It does use less grit.
The 14 pound barrel has some ceramic containinging grit in it now. I received an agate and a rose that were nasty. Old and stored in a smokers house or a welding shop. They are not polished, but the nasty is gone.
I am happy with the results 1 tablespoon of 220, 600, and AO polish in the 4 pounder. A couple of days each. I would expect that tripling the load to approximately 14 lbs and tripling the grit would work. I believe I am tumbling longer than the grit lasts.
