Good evening from N.C. I'm a new member, but have been reading the different posts for a few weeks. I've been just trying to glean all the info I can regarding tumbling and polishing. I've never studied geology, and I don't know enough to know how much I don't know. I just really enjoy polishing really interesting looking rocks, and am hoping my family and I can get out and do some rockhounding later this year and find some nice examples to shine up. I look forward to learning a lot on this site.

Thank you. I can already tell from the posts that I have been reading that there are a lot of real good, salt-of-the-earth type folks on here. I'm already feeling at home.

Welcome from Northern California nchillbilly ! Please tell us a little about the equipment you have (or want to get) - so we can help you out creating those shiny rocks. At the moment, my arsenal is pretty small and basic. I have a thumler a-r2, model B, and am currently waiting for shawn at the rock shed to get some uv-10mb's back in stock. I'm staying small with my equipment for now because I work a full time job, a part time job, am raising a 7 y.o. girl, and occasionally enjoy sleeping . My collection of rocks have all been purchased as roughs from internet suppliers. I hope my family and I can get out into the mountains of western NC/ eastern tenn. to find something interesting to throw in the tumbler. It's kind of funny. I was first introduced to rock tumbling almost 40 years ago, but since I was only 10 y.o. and not gainfully employed, my supply of rocks ran out quickly when the ones supplied with my kit ran out. Fast forward to 2017. Took my daughter to one of those pay gem mines and she found just enough to get excited. That caused me to drag out some of my equipment from years ago and I quickly became consumed with searching (on the internet) for and polishing some neat looking rocks. I'm glad I found this site. I feel there will be so much useful info and maybe I'll even be able to purchase some interesting examples from around the country from some of the other members. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

from SE Tennessee!! Glad to have another southern 'local' on the board! Glad to be on the board. Not sure where exactly you are, but one of the places we're going to try to visit is the murphy,NC/Tennessee river/Tellico plains area to dig and sift some of the creeks and rivers later this year (fingers crossed).

Welcome from Northern Arizona! Thank you so much. I've only been to Arizona once, but I'll bet there are some awesome rocks out there.

I misspoke in my earlier post. I meant the murphy,NC/Ocoee river/tellico plains area (davis creek). I'm in Chattanooga, the land of limestone! But I've done a lot of collecting all through NC and especially in the Chunky Gal/Buck Creek/Lake Chatuge area's in the past. I would definitely talk with the local rangers before you do anything other than surface collecting. The rules have been in flux for several years and I have heard some horror stories about collectors being prosecuted for collecting at the Ray Mine (farther north above Asheville).
