This last saturday I attended a gem and mineral show and bought a slab of mariposite. At the time I didnt think to ask the seller if he knew what polish to use. I cant find anything on the web about it. does any of you know or cut this material? thanks

Welcome to the RTH home. Would you send us a picture of your newly acquired slab please? It would in the words of Dr. Phil "help us to help you".

Much of it is mixed hardnesses, so treat it like other mixed hardness stones to avoid undercutting. Tends to be soft, so light pressure and you can skip the coarser wheels once you get to the doming stage. I agree with diamond wheels and polish on hard leather. You can sometimes bring up the shine a bit with a final buff with ZAM. Makes very pretty gems.

Tough one to polish to a really nice finish. I use optical grade cerium oxide on a leather pad with just enough moisture to create a good drag against the wheel. This is one you have to be careful not to overheat too as it's kind of a dolomite type mix and can fracture if it gets too hot on the pad....Mel
