Hello. I just joined today to get connected with everyone in the hobby. My name is Tim our family including my wife and 4 kids (5,4,2,1) like rockhounding. We live near the Gorge/Portland Or and like to travel around the Pacific Northwest. My addiction started as a kid in Northern CA collecting whatever I found. I got my wife hooked by hunting agates at the beach. Since having kids, we've collected thousands of agates at the beaches/rivers and branched out into thundereggs in eastern oregon. We're always looking for family friendly places to collect pet wood, agates, thundereggs, geodes, etc. Last year I got a vibratory rock tumbler and am almost done polishing my whole collection (of those that need it of course). I even slabbed most all of my thundereggs and polished those too.
This year my two oldest kids are asking to find fossilized dinosaur bones for camping trip this summer. I'm trying convincing them to go for fossils but they're stuck on dino bones. Does anybody have suggestions? Also on my list is to visit a Tourmaline mine in California.

the problem with dino bone is if it is on public land and they catch you your in jail. Take the kids fishing in sw Wyoming. there is a quarry near Green River where you pay a fee and can dig fossil fish. you need a bar (the metal kind not the one stocked with liquor) and hammer and chistles.

Welcome to the forum. If you get down near Las Vegas there are some places I can take you for selenite crystals, fossil sponges and shells, and various stones.

Welcome from Virginia. Sounds like you are well on your way in this hobby. It's great that the whole family gets involved.

Welcome from the other side of the Columbia in Vantucky. The only place I "find" vertebrate fossils is in really old collections, even when I don't (nod, nod, wink, wink)
