Thanks Sabre.....Just ordered a little booklet about the Barstow area rock hounding......it may help us a little too. Be very careful. That book has Anton of great information, but some of the coordinates are off. For instance "Paul Bunyan" isn't even close. If ya wanna see that PM me, but it ain't a beginner's hunt for sure. Hard rock mining 500 vertical feet up a very steep trail over unstable scree. Thanks NRG.....we'll be starting out with the casual hikes first......Momma's got to get back into hiking shape first......lol
I'm very familiar with GPS/USGS/State Plane Coordinate Systems and other Geo-data gathering.....being a land surveyor and all.

Got the little Rockhound in Barstow booklet yesterday.......sure wish we had it when doing the Opal Mtn. trips. We had been to a few Calico sites as our first outings in the region years ago. It's only been the last year when we tried our hand at the Opal Mtn. Locations (after we got the Cherokee). Seems where we have been looking is much less abundant and more difficult to traverse for agate and jasper. Never fails, we always seem to randomly pick the more difficult journey's first......lol
Anyway, we are planning a couple of trips in April........I've heard a lot of talk at this forum about the Cady's and Lavic.......seems momma won't mind the Jeep trekking those trails off Powerline Rd for Cady material and then Lavic Rd. for some jasper.....Maybe even snoop around the Pisgah Crater.

All the familiarity on the world won't help when the coords are simply wrong. No guessing from that point. It's a big desert and he was over 2 miles off.

I bought the book too. The map is ok, but with the book, it all makes much more sense.
I am seriously considering going there in May to smell around. I know it will be 100 but at least it will be 100 and fun as opposed to 100 and listening to bad boy gang bangers cry about how hot it is in 100% humidity.

I'm looking at S Cady, Afton Canyon, and maybe the travertine deposit off Ft Irwin Rd

The CFMS has a week-long camp there yearly. Very reasonable. I've heard nothing but good things about it. Fine teachers teach all/many of the hobby related skills.
CFMS is California Federation of Mineralogical Societies

Unless there is a rare spectacular material,.what we found was forgettable.
