Zzyzx Road, and the town of Zzyzx, California (formerly Soda Springs) are about 105 miles southwest of Las Vegas down I-15. In years past, a well known rock hounding area, it is now located inside the boundaries of the Mojave National Preserve.

Hahaha seriously there's a Youtube video on how to pronounce it... Uh, I was close, lol. Not that that word comes up in spoken conversation very often, but whenever I would see the sign, in my head I would pronounce it to myself, with a short "i" sound, not long. From seeing the sign, I also know how to spell it! (Please understand, I mean no offense to anyone.)

Never was corrected by anyone, so I simply went about my way. We actually have a business in town with that name. It's a local head shop, and I'm not referring to car engine stuff. And, no, before anyone asks, I'm not a patron. Dave

I used the services of a typesetter in Provo, UT back in '81 or '82 by that name. Funny, because I needed type for my card game - Zar. Us Z guys stick together! Lynn

No one but a rockhounder (or frequent driver across the Mojave from So Cal to Lost Wages) would know WTH heck were talking about anyway. (Or maybe herpetologist...) So I never had even the slightest inkling to find out how it is pronounced, lol. Thank you for the elucidation, Tommy!
Patron of a non-automotive head shop? Dave, I would never think that of you!
And now I have to go onto You Tube and search "Ram." I understand they have the entire "series" of the Dodge Ram / Viking commercials, and then some. I thought that was about the best one. That, and the Jeep ad with Jeff Goldblum (and a dinosaur, naturally!).

Someday in the future they'll excavate and find many skeletons, all with remains of 1950-1970 clothing. I've heard this was a prime burial area for bad guys from Las Vegas.

In years past, a well known rock hounding area, it is now located inside the boundaries of the Mojave National Preserve. I thought instead of starting a new thread or spending time re-searching the archives here, I'd ask you a few questions......You've been to so many locations and are pretty straight forward with information which I appreciate....:
The wife and I are planning a few 1 day turnarounds to a few popular locations out in the deserts near us. We are a bit more than casual hounders, and we'll dig a little as well as surface pick any jasper, agate or quartz that can be stacked in a 5gal bucket......lol
We've done the Opal Mountain/Black Hills trips in the Calif. Mojave and would like to venture out towards the Arizona's. We have a new two-wheel drive Jeep Cherokee (but momma doesn't want to scratch her up), so we'll try to stay on graded roads.
We're looking at the Quartzite, Bouse Road and Saddle Mtn. areas.........are we gonna waste our time....? We're not looking for the magnificent but would love to bring back some tumbling material to make frig magnets with...........we've often thought about the zzyzzyx road adventure too....lol
Any advice is appreciated......Thanks.

Thanks Sabre.....Just ordered a little booklet about the Barstow area rock hounding......it may help us a little too. Be very careful. That book has Anton of great information, but some of the coordinates are off. For instance "Paul Bunyan" isn't even close. If ya wanna see that PM me, but it ain't a beginner's hunt for sure. Hard rock mining 500 vertical feet up a very steep trail over unstable scree.
