Hellooo Everyone!
I'm "LapiHappyTiggertaj" or just "Tiggertaj." I'm located in central Washington State.
I'm a newbie to not only this site, but to rock tumbling all together!
I Don't know ANYONE else in my area who tumbles rocks or is into lapidary.
So for now, until I can hook up w/someone else to kick around with, I'm in this alone....
I hear there's a rock/gem club of some sort in the area, but haven't yet searched them out.
Would Love to learn from others & find a friend to go bopping around the hills & nearby mountains kicking rocks with....
I've always loved being outdoors & would always pick up "pretty" or unusual rocks from the time I was a kid. Also had an interest in rock polishing, but never had the opportunity.
I recently bought a double barrel Thumler's Tumbler & ran a small batch of stones. They seemed to come out well for my 1st shot at it! ☺
Now the bug has bitten & I'm scratching around for rocks to FILL my barrel enough for another round!
I have a LOT of patience, but my patience ran out waiting for the snow to melt! So, I gave in & bought a box of rocks off Amazon! 😁 I told my sister she could just give me a "Box of Rocks" for Christmas & she thought I'd slipped a gear!
For the moment I'm happy w/ a new box of rocks & I have BOTH barrels tumbling! 😀
And I'm working my Dremel to cut some smaller for another load to follow!
Now I also NEED to learn HOW to make jewelry, etc, w/the stones I polish & possibly sell(?) a few to help support my new hobby or habit(?).
I'm open to any & all suggestions to help me learn!
Some questions I have starting out are:
1) a. Where can I find & learn how to identify WHAT stones I have?
b. Any GOOD Books or Web Sites for ID purposes?
(I have purchased Judy Hall's Crystal/Gem Bible #2)
2) Where's the Best place to purchase grit & polish?
3) Does anyone have a GOOD used rubber barrel #1 or #3 lb size sitting around I could buy? (Thumler's Tumbler)
4) What kind of rock hammer should I have if I'm out rock hunting or is it necessary for a beginner to have a "rock" hammer?
5) How do you find Where to Go Rock Hunting in nearby areas or Who Owns the property?
6) WHAT DO You DO to Protect yourself from rattle snakes when in rocky areas?
Thank You to ALL in Advance for your advice!
