There's a ton of petrified wood lying around the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands here in South Dakota. Much of it is obvious, even to relative newbies like my son and I. Some of the pieces look so "fresh" you'd swear they were contemporary and not petrified. But there are other pieces that aren't as obvious to us. They have a "grain", but different than the typical pieces we find. Can you tell me if these are all petrified wood? Or are the latter pieces something else? I know there's also petrified palm in this area, but I don't know what that's supposed to look like, and if that's what some of the latter pieces might be. #1 - Obvious petrified wood #2 - Another obvious petrified wood (with both pieces above tumble polished). #3 - Petrified Wood? Obviously different than the "typical" pieces we find (above), but with a definite 'grain' pattern. #4 - One of the most colorful pieces, definite grain, but so different from the above pieces that I just want confirmation that it is petrified wood. #4b - Flip side of #4 above #5 - Not as obvious as some of the above, but especially when you look at it through a loupe, you see the same, scattered, elongated "grain" patterns as in #3. #6 - Least obvious in these pictures, but again through a loupe you see scattered little linear nodules. like #3.
