I have been trying to find information on the opal found in Louisiana. I have lived in Vernon Parish Louisiana all my life and love rock hounding maybe it started when I was very young watching my grandpa collect. I was wondering if anyone has any of the sandstone opal that has not been cut or polished and if so do you have any pictures? I have taken some pictures of what I have pieces have not been cut, polished, or had any chemical treatments. I am new to this forum as of today, very excited to find this online community.

Welcome from Virginia! I'm afraid I can't help, but I am sure someone here can.

Welcome to the forum, from Northern Arizona!
I have one piece (maybe 2, can't remember) stashed away somewhere that I bought because I didn't have any. Being an opalholic, I must always have at least once piece of opal for my collection from every different spot.
I'll try to find it and post a picture for you.

Hello from Mississippi larockhound. Once upon a time I did some research on the subject. Our state geologist is pretty tight lipped on this matter but did find a healthy stop of La Opal here in Ms. I narrowed it down to the vicinity of Claiborne County. Most is found along Bayou Pierre around the La/Ms line. I personally have not found any but found a lot of wonderful things looking for it. Welcome to the forum and good luck in your search!

I'll also have a look to see whether I have any at hand. It is boulder-type opal in a sandstone matrix. There is only a single location, supplier and it's private land, IIRC.

I would love to see everyone's Louisiana opal and what you've done with it if anyone wants to share their pictures. i can't seem to find many pictures of it in the rough. I think I've found some and I've read about the opal mine down the road that was closed and I think that's a shame. My grandpa passed away when I was like 3 or so. He had logs of petrified wood and so many rocks. Most of which was sold off or walked off after he passed. Probably left over from his collection, that's what I'm telling myself because if not I'm about to dig the dang yard up haha. So how do we post pictures on here? Do we have to link it?
